「but not」はどのように訳したらよろしいですか？
とある本で、 Men but not women also show evidence of nostalgic attachment to cars from their youth. とありました。 おおざっぱに意訳すると、 「男性は、若い頃に見た車に懐かしい愛情を見せる。」になると思いますが、 女性はどう見ているのかが「but not」の訳し方が分からなかったため、わかりませんでした。 どなたか、アドバイスをお願いします。

Men but not women also とあった場合，women を強く否定（women はそうではない，と）しているわけではなく，ここでは men だけのことを述べているのですよ，という意味合いです． したがって，意訳すると，「女性はさておき，女性がどうかは触れないが，女性もそうだとは言えないが，男性だけに限っては」といったことになります．

通常は，not A but B や B, not A で「A でなく B」という意味になると辞書には書かれています。 実際の文章では，他にも，men, but not women, ～や，men (but not women) ～のように挿入的に，「男性は，（女性ではなく，ですが）」のような言い方がなされることがあります。men, although not women, ～のように言うこともあります。

「－ but not ～」で、「～ではなく－が」となります。 つまり「女ではなく男が」ですね。 直訳で 女ではなく男が、自分が若い時の車を懐かしむ愛情の徴候を見せます。 意訳で 女はそうでもないんだけど、男ってのは昔の車の郷愁に浸るもんだよ。 こんな感じでしょうか。
