次の英文について質問です。

次の英文について質問します。 Harry was just thinking that all he needed was for Dumbledore's pet bird to die while he was alone in the office with it, when bird burst into flames. 日本語訳は、「ダンブルドアのペットの鳥が、僕の他には誰もいないこの部屋で死んでしまったら、万事休すだ、僕はもうダメだ―そう思ったとたん、鳥が炎に包まれた。」です。 質問は次の部分です。 all he needed was for Dumbledore's pet bird to die 彼が必要であるすべては、ダンブルドアのペットの鳥が死ぬことです。(?) 死なないことが必要だと思うので、toの前にnotがいる(?)と思うのですがどうなんでしょうか。 よろしくお願いします。

こんにちは。 私も反意的用法だと思います。 ここ（米国）では、よく耳にするフレーズです。 既に、自分が悪い状況にある時、更に何か不都合な 事が起こったりした場合などに 「Oh, great.....That's all I need.」 なんて言いながら、頭を抱えてしまったりします。 こういった表現の仕方は、ネイティブな人達の会話に 接する機会が少ないと、なかなか理解がしにくい ですね。 他の方々と同じような意見になってしまいましたが、 少しでも参考にして頂けたら幸いです。

wind-sky-wind さん、反感を持たれるかもしれないのを承知で言いますが、私はこれは、皮肉な、反語的な表現だと確信しています。 こういう表現が「今とっても厄介な事になるのに必要なのは」というニュアンスで使われているとは私には感じられません。実際、私の友人たちがこういった表現を使う時は、"oh, great" 等を一緒に使い事が多いです。これは明らかに great な状況ではないですよね。 私は副業で音楽をやっていますが、ギターをたくさん持っている知り合いで、次のような表現をよくする奴がいます。 I want a Les Paul, but I need another guitar like I need a hole in my head. レス・ポール欲しいんだけどさ、俺は頭に穴をあけるのと同じくらいもう一本ギターがいるからなあ。誰も「頭に穴」が必要な人はいません。つまり、もうこれ以上はギターは必要ない、ということですね。例文も，私はこれと同じような文だと思います。

　どうも，私には「皮肉」だとか，「反語」だとかには思えないのです。need が持つ文字通りの意味だとしか思えないのです。 　日本語で，「必要だ」「十分だ」「事足りる」という表現は， 　「この問題を解くには，これを理解することだけが必要だ」「これだけのことを理解すれば，その問題を解くのに十分だ」という場合もあれば， 　「彼の怒りを爆発させるには，これを言うだけで十分だ」「核ミサイルの発射ボタンを押すだけでいい」という場合もあります。 　それと同じように，英語の need という単語も，その人が望むと望まざるとにかかわらず，何かが発生するのに「必要」である場合に用いられるのではないでしょうか，皮肉とかではなく，文字通りの意味として。he が主語である，というところが問題なのでしょうか。

アメリカに37年住んでいる者です。　私なりに書かせてくださいね。 all he needed wasと言う表現をして、この文章の直訳的な意味の「彼が必要だったのはｘｘｘだけだった」と言う意味で使われている表現ではないのです。 実はご質問の日本語訳にヒントがあるのです。「万事休すだ、僕はもうダメだ」の部分なのですね。 鳥が死んでも死ななくてもHarryはもう既に万事休すかそれに近い状況にいるのです。　そのような状況に使うのが、このAll he needed wasと言う表現なのですが、今以上に今の悪状況を悪くするるだけのことになる、と言う意味で使う表現なんですね。 つまり、ダンブルドアの部屋に一人でいると言う事が何か非常に悪い理由でいるのですね。（本を読んでいませんので詳細は分かりませんが）起こられるとか、とにかく大きな問題を抱えているわけです。 そんなときに一人で待っていて、とんでもない事になったな。　どうしようか。　なんて説明したり良いんだ。なんて心配しているときに、こんなときに彼の大事な鳥が死んだら余計とんでもない事になってしまう、と心配していたら、鳥が炎に包まれた、なんですね。 結婚式で玉の輿なのでぶち壊したくない。　はやく式が終わればすべてOK何だけど、こんなときに先週「手を切った」昔の彼が来たらせっかくのチャンスが台無しになる、と思っていたらその彼が教会のドアが開いた、なんていう状況と同じなわけですね。　She was thinking that all she needed was for her old boyfriend to show up while the wedding just about finished, when he walked into the church.と言う感じです。　よく似た文章ですね。 ですから、鳥が焼け死ぬ事は大切な事ではないのです。　必要な事でもありません。　でもそれが起こったらもっとまずい、と言うわけです。 一種の反意的用法（普通の自体でも死んではもらいたくないんだけど、彼が大事にしているペットが死んだら死ぬ事自体が困るのではなく死んでしまう事が今ですら悪い状況をもっと悪くしてしまう。　それだけダンブルドアが来るまで待っているのが怖いと言う事でもあるわけですね。）All he neededという表現をしてHe surely did not needと言う意味でここでは使われているわけです。 お化けのメーキャップをした友達がパーティーに行くというので、彼にWow, you look so beautiful!!と言うのと同じ反意的用法といわれるものです。　きれいだ、とはいっていないのです。 これでいかがでしょうか。　分かりにくい点がありましたら、補足質問してください。

私はこういった表現は「皮肉な」言い方だと理解しています。これはハリー・ポッターが校長先生の部屋に一人でいる時に、鳥が死んでしまったら大変な事になる、と思っている訳ですよね？「死なないでくれ」と言う代わりに、"Oh, great. All I need is for his bird to die." 等と言う訳です。この場合の "great" は当然本当に「やった！」と思っている訳ではなく、"all I need..." も、「死んでほしい」と思っている訳ではありません。 「あーあ，こういう時に限って鳥が死ぬんだよな」 と言った訳し方ではどうでしょう？この日本語も、「鳥が死ぬのはこういった状況下に限定される」といった文字通りの意味ではないですよね。 All I need... をこういった状況で使う事はよくあります。例えば、大切なデートに遅れそうなのに電車がなかなかやって来ない時に、 All I need is for the train to be late. と言ったりします。

残念ながら， ＞all he needed was Dambledore's pet bird to die では文は成り立ちません。 　all ... was to die「すべては死ぬことでした」でSVC が成り立っていますね。この to die という主格補語となる to 不定詞の名詞用法の部分に意味上の主語として for Dambledore's pet bird を置いて，「すべては，…鳥が死ぬことでした」となっているのです。to die の前に，Dambledore's pet bird をいきなり置くことはできないのです。　 　all he needed was Dambledore's pet bird というSVC に to die をつけたつもりかもしれませんが，これも無理があります。

all he needed was Dambledore's pet bird to dieなら、彼が必要である全ては、ダンブルドアのペットの鳥が死ぬことです。になると思います。 しかし、wasの後にforが入っているので、D～のペットが死ぬことに「対して」彼がすべき事の全てはとなります。 即ちペットの死に際する対策をまさに彼が考えていたときに、鳥が炎に包まれたことになります。

確かに"all he needed"で「必要なことすべて」ですが、ここでは何のために「必要なことすべて」なのかを考える必要があります。 ハリーが「生き残る（すみません全体の流れが分からないので適当です）ために」必要なことすべてであるとすれば、ここはもちろん「鳥が死なないこと」になります。 これをハリーが「万事休する」のに必要なことと考えれば、原文通り、「鳥が死ぬこと」になるわけです。 日本語訳に則する形で、より直訳的に訳すとすると、 ダンブルドアのペットの鳥が、彼が部屋に一人でいる時に死んでしまうということが、万事休するために必要なすべてのことだ...とハリーが考えていたまさにその時、鳥が炎に包まれた、 という感じでしょうか。 ちょっと説明が分かりにくいかもしれません。不明瞭な点があれば補足質問して下さい。

「（だめになってしまうのに）必要であるすべてのことは，鳥が死ぬことです」→「鳥が死ぬだけでだめになってしまう」ということです。 　「彼が必要としているすべては，死なないことです」だと，死なない限りは大丈夫という感じになり，ここでは，死ななくても病気になったり，奪われたりしても困るということが含まれてきません。とにかく，死んだら即アウトなのです。

As a result of experiments, the beam of the ship was increased by 10 feet (3.0 m) over that initially intended to improve stability. The hull immediately in front of the rudder and the balanced rudder itself followed naval design practice to improve the vessel's turning response. The Admiralty contract required that all machinery be below the waterline, where it was considered to be better protected from gunfire, and the aft third of the ship below water was used to house the turbines, the steering motors and four 375-kilowatt (503 hp) steam driven turbo-generators. The central half contained four boiler rooms, with the remaining space at the forward end of the ship being reserved for cargo and other storage. Coal bunkers were placed along the length of the ship outboard of the boiler rooms, with a large transverse bunker immediately in front of that most forward (number 1) boiler room. Apart from convenience ready for use, the coal was considered to provide added protection for the central spaces against attack. At the very front were the chain lockers for the huge anchor chains and ballast tanks to adjust the ship's trim. The hull space was divided into twelve watertight compartments, any two of which could be flooded without risk of the ship sinking, connected by 35 hydraulically operated watertight doors. A critical flaw in the arrangement of the watertight compartments was that sliding doors to the coal bunkers needed to be open to provide a constant feed of coal whilst the ship was operating, and closing these in emergency conditions could be problematic.
