１．ではあなたの理解の通り「種類」でいいです。ただし「抽象名詞」でなく「物質名詞」ですね。 ２．は該当しないでしょう。というのは、１．のような場合、theがなくては、「人間が利用している自然の様々な存在形態、現象」を具体的に想定させないからです。あなたの挙げている例では、contractとdeteils両方に定冠詞があるのでそういう意味になっているのであって、「the+普通名詞で全体を総括する用法」とまで細分化するのは無駄であるように思います。
