この主語は複数ですか単数ですか

質問の Renovations は見落としておりました。 renovation は不可算も可算も両方使います。 ただ，renovation and expansion でけっこうよく使われています。 だから，もしミスがあるとしたら renovations の方を renovation にして，was のままとした方がいいと思います。

Renovationsとsがついているわけですから、それだけで、このwasが間違いだと判断できます。その文は文法的に間違っています。

Renovations was expected and expansion was expected ～ という感覚が Renovations and expansion ～ were expected です。 「改装も，拡張も予期された」 ここでは renovation and expansion で「改装・拡張」でそういう変化のまとまったものです。 All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. 勉強ばかりで遊びがないと子供をだめにする。 こういうのもそれぞれ一つずつ，というのでなく，同時に２つ成り立ってということです。

アメリカの人とチャットで話していたのですが、 「I bought one the other day, and I was surprised at how fun they are」 と言っていました。 ニンテンドーの wii の話です。 「one と言ったのにどうして they なの？」と聞くと、その人は 「I bought one yes but they (as in wiis) are fun. Sometimes English is confusing even to me. Natural speech doesn't hold true to grammar rules sometimes.」 と答えました。 単数が複数に、また複数が単数に。 こんな事は日常会話の中でよくあるのでしょうか？ 時々気づくのですが、長い文を話している時、主語が変わってきてしまう事などありますよね。 耳で流しながら聞くと、意味がわかるのですが、 実際書いてみると文法的に意味が通じなくなります。 そんな感じで、子供でも三人称単数だとかきっちり使い分けて話しているのに、 単数/複数が混乱する事はよくあるのでしょうか？
