... a hill ＋ A deserted factory stood at the foot of it(＝the hill). 「さびれた工場がその丘のふもとにあった」 この it を which にして， a hill at the foot of which と先行詞 a hill の後に置きます。 そして，倒置が起こり，... stood a deserted factory と動詞→主語という順序になっています。 とにかく，先行詞 a hill を it で受けたとして at the foot of it というかたまりをつくって， そのかたまりのまま at the foot of which と関係代名詞 which を用いて かたまりのまま前に出て，先行詞の後に持ってきます。 やがて，彼女は（その）ふもとにさびれた工場がある丘へとやって来た。 →やがて彼女は丘へとやって来た。丘のふもとにはさびれた工場があった。 このように，お決まり通り後ろからかけて訳すより，前から訳した方が 自然に感じられます。 いずれにせよ，主格・目的格という単純な考えでは書けません。 あくまでも空所補充の選択ではありますが，特殊な英文です。

at the foot of a hill「丘のふもとに」 のa hillが前に出てその空いた隙間にwhichが嵌まり込んだという仕掛けです。 Soon we came to a hill at the foot (of which) stood a deserted factory. 「すぐさま我々は、ふもとに工場の廃墟が見える丘へと辿り着いた」

書き換え可能かどうか教えてください。 In the suburbs there is a rocky hill, on the top of which an ancient castle stands. 上の英文の on ～ stands 部分を on whose top an ancient stands と書き換えることはできるのでしょうか。よく the roof of which を whose roof で書き換えることはできますが…この場合はどうでしょうか。
