選択問題でわからない
John will come home ( ） an hour. 選択肢が till by at in の４つでした。 正解はinです。 in an hour で一時間のうちに、一時間たてばの意味だそうです。 でもわたしはbyでも正解なんじゃないかなあと 思います。 なぜbyではいけないんですか？ ジョンは一時間までにもどってくるでしょうとなるからですか？ あ・・もしかして日本語にしては、 なんとなく成立するかもしれないけど 微妙なニュアンスの違いなんでしょうか・・？

byは「○○（時刻や日にち）までに」と終了の期限や時刻などを表す時に使われると思います． 例えば，"by seven a.m."だったら「午前7時までに」といった感じで． 仮に，"John will come home ( ) seven a.m."なら，"by"が適切なんじゃないでしょうか？ > ジョンは一時間までにもどってくるでしょうとなるからですか？ これは日本語としてもおかしいですね．「一時間後までには～」ならいいと思いますが，「一時間までに～」では変でしょう．

After his success with three local restaurants, John, an entrepreneur, has decided to open ???? in Singapore. この????に入る選択肢の問題で、anotherが正解なのはわかるのですが、otherは不可でしょうか？ otherは「その他」なので、レストランとは限らない。わざわざアントレプレナーと挿入されているから、レストランを指し示すことができるanotherにする。 と推測してみましたが自信が持てません。 直接参考にしたのは下記です。 I will buy that PC, and he will buy another. という場合には、anotherと言っただけで、彼が買おうとしているのは別のPCであることがわかります。 これが、 I will buy that PC, and he will buy others. だと、彼が買おうとしているのはほかの物であるというだけで、PCなのか何なのかわかりません。 ちなみに、 もし、ジョンが将来１０個レストランを持ちたいと思っていて、今、残りの７個を同時にオープンすることを決めたとした場合、others は同じような理由でダメでしょうか？the othersならOKのような気がします。 詳しい方、よろしくお願いします。

プログレス２１ Ｂｏｏｋ２ １６ページに Ｗe stopped an hour for lunch,but we will be there before it gets dark.. という文がありました。 「１時間止まる」は「stop for an hour 」ではないのでしょうか？ このダイアローグの下の例文は 「We will stop for an hour at lunch time.」 「We will stop for an hour when it is time for lunch.」 となっています。

「あなたは一時間前にこの部屋にいましたか？」を英作文する問題で Were you in this room an hour ago ? が模範解答になっていたんですが、 Did you stay in this room an hour ago ? としてはいけないでしょうか？ 何かニュアンスの違いなどあるのでしょうか？

atは、時刻、時の一点を表し、場所は、比較的狭い場所や広い場所でも一点と感じる時に使う、と使うとあるのですが… 例文では、 School begins at eight thirty. ↑これはatで適当だと思うのですが… Drive carefully at night. Ken will come to see me at noon. ↑nightもin the morning の様にinを使うのではないのでしょうか。 何故atを使っているのかを知りたいです。 Her children will come home at Christmas. ↑特定日はonではなかったでしょうか… 回答お願いします

「～になってくる」の訳し方が知りたいです。 例えば「しだいに彼は一時間では食事がし終わらないようになってきた。」だったら、 自分では Gradually he couldn't finish to eat an meal in an hour. と書いてみたのですが、これでは、単に「しだいに彼は一時間では食事がし終わらなかった」ですよね。 「～になる」については「come to」という単語を思いついたのですが、couldとうまくつなげられません。
