force 自体を受動態にするのとは異なると思います。 あくまでも，「コンピュータの問題」が主体となって，フライトを遅らせた，のであって，「フライトを遅らせる」という状態になさしめた，というのも，「フライトが遅らされた」という状態になさしめた，というのも A computer problem ... forced O to do という形になります。「フライトを遅らせる」と書こうと思うと，主語 they を持ってきて，force them to delay the flights となりますが，この they を避けて，the flights to be delayed という形にしているのでしょう。 I had them repair my watch. を I had my watch repaired. とするのと同じ形です。

全く問題ないです。 delayという動詞が日本語の感覚とは少し違った使い方をする為に混乱を覚えただけだと思います。 delayは他動詞として使うことが多く、「延期する、遅らせる、遅刻させる」という意味になりますが、文章の作り方に特徴があって、 [主語]には遅らせる原因となるモノ、[目的語]にはそれによって被害を被るモノが来ます。 こういう構文は、感情表現の動詞(surpriseなど)と似ています。 例 The heavy snow delayed our flight. ここで目的語を前に出し主語にすると当然受身形になりますよね？ Our flight was delayed by the heavy snow. さて、ここでforceの構文をもう一度整理すると、「S + force + O + to不定詞」となりSVOCの第5文型です。 この文型に於いてはOとCの間に主語と述語の関係が成り立ちます。 質問文の中での目的語はten of the carrier's flightsですね。 これはdelayするものでしょうか？ それともdelayされる(＝be delayed)ものでしょうか？ 答えは後者ですので問題はありません。

正しいと思います。 「遅れた状態にした」と考えてよいでしょう。 forceは「無理矢理に…させる」，be delayedは「遅刻させられる」で，「否応なく遅刻させた」という意味になります。

「Ａ ｆｏｒｃｅｄ Ｂ ｔｏ ｂｅ ｄｏｎｅ は正しくないと思う」 ⇒ 私自身はこの表現が間違いという気はしないのですが。 手元の『研究社英和大辞典』に The Prime Minister forced the report to be sent back to the deliberationcouncil. という例文があります。 こうお思いになるには何らかの理由、根拠があるのではないでしょうか？むしろ私としてはこちらに興味があります。よろしければ「補足」で教えてください。 確かに、"force ... to do" の do の部分には 「状態動詞、完了不定詞、進行形の不定詞など状態を示すものはこない ex. 1. I forced him to learn the answer. 2. * ...to know the answer. 3. * ...to be sleeping. 4. * ...to have slept. 5. * ...to be allowed to leave.」 という記述は『英語基本動詞辞典』(研究社出版、p.600)にあるようですが。

回答ありがとうございます。質問する前に辞書(Bookshelf3.0)を調べたのですが載っていませんでした。 I 〔＋目＋to do〕(しばしば受身で用いる)とありますがこれは次の様なパターンでした。 He was forced to confess 質問文ですが、force以下は受動態で、無理矢理～させられたという解釈で良いのでしょうか。でもそれなら、 A forced B to do.又はB was forced to do.だと思うのですが。
