Apparently they feel this makes the payments "insincere." The major reason, of course, for structuring the fund that way was because all of Japan's international obligations for damages related to World War II had already been settled by the 1951 San Francisco "Treaty of Peace with Japan," signed by all the major powers. Ignoring that treaty's provisions and making new payments could have created a legal nightmare for Japan. On this issue, I'll side with Japan for two major reasons. First, while the comfort women suffered terribly, so did millions of other people during World War II, and few of them are getting special treatment. How is it fair that a former comfort woman gets a payment, while someone who had their limbs blown off, or was enslaved in Siberia does not? World War II was basically one giant atrocity. Sixty million people perished and millions more suffered injuries and other horrors. Trying to micro-divide that gargantuan mess into little victims groups and hand out money to achieve "justice" is simply impossible to achieve fairly, I believe. Second, it has been 65 years since these crimes were committed. None of Japan's current leaders bear any responsibility for what took place in World War II. Demanding that somebody who is not responsible for something apologize for it anyway is perverse to my thinking about justice. Assigning responsibility for past crimes to the present generation of a country causes much of the prejudice and strife in the world today. If people would only focus on the actions of the one in front of them — and leave the crimes of their dead ancestors behind — the whole world could be a much happier place.

For a couple of generations after World War II, one of the images that Japan presented to the world was of a nation where everyone was a member of the middle class. Another common image was that most companies offered lifetime employment. Although these two images were not so realistic, there was some relative truth. Compared to most countries, the gap between rich and poor in Japan was actually quite small, and many companies and the government did offer jobs for life.

When we think of Chagall’s works, bright and beautiful and pictures come to mind. But this picture expresses a dark and tragic mood. People are running to escape the fighting. Some Jewish buildings are being set on fire. In the center we can see the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. We also see a few Jewish rabbis. Is this just a religious picture? Chagall did not live only in a word of beautiful imagery. His pictures sometimes expressed the chaos around him. In his younger days,he had hard times during World War I and the Russian Revolution. In 1935,Chagall visited Poland and was shocked to find that the Jewish people were being treated badly. He foresaw great danger for the Jewish people, and the start of another war. He painted pictures warning the world of the danger. Soon after that,World War II broke out and the Holocaust began. In 1940 the Nazis took over Paris. He feared for his safety and moved to the United States in 1941.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For instance, the things that give meaning to the lives of the Kaihari in Africa, and shape the way that they they perceive the world, are in no way inferior to those that Norwegians use to measure their lives and the world around them.

Many Americans feared that the end of World War II and the subsequent drop in military spending might bring back the hard times of the Great Depression. But instead, pent-up consumer demand fueled exceptionally strong economic growth in the post-war period. The automobile industry successfully converted back to producing cars, and new industries such as aviation and electronics grew by leaps and bounds. ⇨Many Americans feared that the end of World War II and the subsequent drop in military spending might bring back the hard times of the Great Depression.
