９６年の東大入試問題に次のような文がありました They may also know what is it to have their own right to this or that denied or ignored by others. 某解説書の訳では 「彼らはまた何らかの自分の権利を他人から否認されたり、無視されたりするのがどのようなことなのか分かるかもしれない」 とされていました。 ところでここの this or that はどのような存在なのでしょうか？ ここにbeing とかあれば分詞の denied と ｉｇｎｏｒｅｄ の前にある受身としてのｂｅ動詞かなとか推測できるのですが、どうにもこの this or that の使い方とか文法的役割が理解できません。 ｔｈｉｓ＝denied that＝ignored ですか？ どなたか説明お願いします

They may also know what it is to have their own right to this or that denied or ignored by others. （isitはit isではないでしょうか） ここのitは形式的な主語ではないでしょうか。実際の主語はto have thier own right to this or that denied or ignored by others.とすればこの文章を単純化すると They may also know what it is=>それが何かをまたかれらは知るかもしれない。 to have their own right to this or that denied or ignored by others＝＞他の人からあれやこれに対する彼らの権利を他人から否定されたり、無視されたりすること したがいまして、この２つをつなげますと、 他の人からあれやこれに対する彼らの権利を他人から否定されたり、無視されたりすることが何か（どのようなことか）を彼らはまた知るかもしれない。 this or thatは「あれやこれや」ということだと思います。 >ｔｈｉｓ＝denied that＝ignored ですか？ これは考えすぎと思います。

ANo.1 で回答されているとおりだと思います。to this or that は１つのまとまりとして捕えるのが自然です。具体的に何を指しているというのではなくて、their own right to this or that で、「およそ考えられるあれやこれやの権利」 といったニュアンスで用いられています。訳文には 「何らかの」 とありますが、特定の対象に限定しない何かを表しているわけです。 ですから、to this or that という副詞が置いてあるという感じでとらえて、ひとまず to have their own right (that is) denied or ignored by others という文であると思って読んでみてもよいと思います。 to this or that の that に迷わされないことです。

the brain in human beings. there may be excess dopamine activity. these abnormalities could be due to genetics. この、beとか、beingという英単語の役割がよくわかりません。（よく長文では目にしますが…） 具体的には、単純に「ある」とか、「存在している」という意味をもっているのか、 それとも文の構造として様々な意味合いを持っているのか等です。 私には、一見、なんの意味ももたないように思えます。 be,beingによって、どういったニュアンスが生まれるのか 概要を教えていただけないでしょうか。 過去ログを検索して、過去分詞的な意味合いを持つ事は理解できました。 （「～されること」のように，受身の意味で動名詞にすると， be ＋過去分詞という受身の be の部分に ing をつけて，being ＋過去分詞になる。） また、文頭のbeingで分詞構文になることもわかりました。

英文法で以下の問題のthat ---- the caseの部分がよくわかりません。 わかる方がいたら、解答よろしくお願いします。 That ---- the case,the night foreman could not keep his promise to work every night this week. (1)is (2)were (3)having (4)being ----の部分に入る適切な単語を1から4の中から選びなさいという問題です。 答えは(4)で問題の解答には「接続詞がないので1、2は除外、分詞構文である3、4のうち、havingは意味が通じないので(4)を選ぶ」と書いてあります。 分詞構文ということはわかるのですが、分詞構文の場合、主文と分詞構文の主語が一致しないといけなかった気がするのですが、この場合はそれをどのように解釈すればいいのでしょうか？ ちなみにこの問題の訳は 「そういうわけなので、夜勤の現場主任は、今週は毎晩働くという約束を守ることができなかった。」 となっています。 それとも、文法などは考えずに、that being the caseの部分はイディオムとして覚えたほうがいいのでしょうか？
