１年生には比較級は早すぎますね。 Which is smaller, Mars or the earth? それはさておき， earth the earth Earth the Earth 実際にはいろいろな書き方があります。 なんて言って混乱させたらごめんなさい。 学校で出てくるのは主に the earth です。 Mars は大文字で始まっているように固有名詞です。 昔々，むらにいた100人の人間を区別するのに， ひとりひとり名前をつけた。 こういうことが固有名詞のはじまりだと思います。 Mars というのはもともとローマ神話の神の名前です。 他の惑星もそうですが，そういうことはおいておいても， とにかく，人間に名前をつけるように名前をつけた。 地球も，それと同じような呼び名と考えて Earth とすることもあります。 しかし，earth はもともと「地，土」という普通の名詞です。 それに，特定の，唯一の the をつけることで わが地球を表しています。 http://okwave.jp/qa/q1405397.html こちらは回答がゆれてしまっている６年前のもの。 http://okwave.jp/qa/q6514341.html こちらは途中，議論から抜けてしまったもの。

形容詞の叙述用法について質問です。 形容詞の叙述用法で、最上級のときtheは不要というのは分かるのですが、(例: I'm happiest in teh morning.) 以下の文の「closest」が、「叙述用法のためtheは不要」と説明書に書いてあるのですが、なぜなのか教えてください。 宇宙の「他の惑星」と比べて、火星は地球に「最も近い」という意味だと思うのですが、なぜ限定用法ではなく、叙述用法なのでしょう。 やはり、the は不要なのでしょうか。 The astronauts will land on Mars to find themselves in very dangerous conditions, although Mars is known to be the planet whose environment is closest to that of Earth.
