 ロンドンで公表されたレポートと、AFPへのコメントの中で、研究者の1ティームは、風刺と揶揄で、アルカイダの魅力と神秘性を剥ぎ取ることによって、アルカイダとの戦いに勝ちをおさめる助けになる、と述べている。  can help win は、直訳すれば「勝利を助けることができる」、help が使役の意味で使われ次に動詞の原形(ここでは win)が来る例は、下記の下の方にあります。  http://www.englishcafe.jp/english3rd/day61.html  glamour は日本では女性だけに使われる「グラマー」になりましたが、単に「魅力」、下記をどうぞ。  http://eow.alc.co.jp/glamour/UTF-8/ (何だか幼稚なティームですね)

    In 1879-80 London incomes formed as predominant a share of all taxable business and professional incomes as did London's wealth among the very wealthy, a fact made clear in Table 3. thetwenty-eight provincial towns with populations in excess of 100,000, and with a combined population of 5,773,000, were assessed under Schedule D for £78,106,000, while the ten London boroughs, whose populations totalled 3,453,000, were assessed for £87,674,000. No less than £12,297,000 in Marylebone, and £10,302,000 in Westminster; by contrast, Liverpool, the wealthiest provincial town, was assessedfor £11,014,000, Manchester and Salford together for £10,800,000, Birmingham for £4,016,000, and so on. Moreover, obviously many provincial cities like Liverpool, Bristol or Edinburgh were primarily commercial or governmental rather than industrial in their primary roles and, again, as with the 1812 data, Schedule D does not include any income arising from ground-rents, from the profits of the public funds, or from any government employees's salaries, all of which would evidently add still further to the lead of London. Since the combined population of the leading provincial towns was two-thirds higher than the London total, it is a plausible inference that London not merely possessed a larger total business income than all of the chief provincial towns combined, but that its middle class was richer per capita and almost certainly more numerous than in the provincial towns.

    With this information. we can see that the human body maintains a very delicate balance between cell creation and cell destruction, when this balance is disrupted the result can be a potentially fatal health condition, cancer is a disease in which too little apoptosis occurs, as cancerous cells often are corrupted in ways that make them resistant to the natural death process and can continue multiplying until destructive tumors are created. On the other hand, in a body that suffers from too much apoptosis, degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's can arise. With the process of apoptosis playing such a vital role in human health, it is no surprise that researchers are continuously studying it. If we can learn how to artificially control the apoptosis of cells in our bodies, it could lead to treatments for many life-threatening illnesses.

    Chemists in the United States have made a three-cent-device to test blood or urine using only stick tape and paper. The device does not need a pump or power source and could one day help doctors in the developing world to carry out cheap disposable tests for diseases such as HIV or malaria, its developers claim. George Whitesides and his colleagues at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, made the device by stacking up alternating layers of paper and double-sided sticky tape, which is impermeable to water. The sample is wicked by capillary action along tiny channels cut into the paper, and holes punched into the tape allow fluid flowing in a channel in one layer to mix with that in another. The team has shown that the device can accommodate up to four different samples at once, and used it to test samples of synthetic urine. The researchers were able to detect the levels of protein and glucose in each sample by spotting indicator chemicals onto the device, which changed colour in response to each substance. They then photographed the results with a camera phone and measured the colour change using computer software. Their findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. よろしくお願いします^^;

    Sunderland’s team also found a relationship between levels of methylated mercury and organic carbon. Particles of organic carbon from phytoplankton or other sources may provide surfaces on which microbes could methylate mercury in the ocean, the researchers suggest. That methylated mercury could then be released back into the water. “We don’t have a causal mechanism yet, but it does seem to be linked to the biological pump in the ocean,” says Sunderland. Previous findings in the southern and equatorial Pacific, she adds, observed similar high methylmercury concentrations where biological activity was highest. That connection has implications for climate change and the mercury cycle: warmer, more productive oceans, with more phytoplankton and more fish, might increase the amount of methylated mercury that ends up on human plates. The researchers also hypothesize that waters in the western Pacific could be picking up mercury deposited from increasing atmospheric emissions in Asia, and then moving to the northeast Pacific. The ocean may only how be responding to higher mercury loads from past atmospheric deposition, Sunderland says. Daniel Cossa of the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER) in LA Seyne-sur-Mer and his colleagues have gathered another set of mercury data, this time from the Mediterranean, to be published in the May issue of Limnology and Oceanography. Both papers indicate that not all methylated mercury comes direct from coastal or river sources, and confirm that methylation occurs at moderate depth in oceans, says Cossa’s co-author Nicola Pirrone, director of Italy’s National Research Council Institute for Atmospheric Pollution in Rende. よろしくお願いしますorz
