＞I grew up in the suburbs in New Jersey. In my school, girls were second-class citizens back then. ⇒（訳文） 「私はニュージャージー州の郊外で育ちました。私の学校では、その当時、女の子は二流の市民（扱い）でした。」 ＞back thenの部分をどう訳しますか？ ⇒backは「元に戻って、前にさかのぼって」といった意味で、thenは「そのとき、当時」といった意味ですから、それを合わせたback then「以前にさかのぼると、さかのぼったその頃は、その当時は」といったニュアンスになります。

back then 当時は。 thenだけで、当時は、になるのですが、backはそちらの方向に戻る。あわせると、さかのぼると、当時は、ですが意味は大して変わらないのでbackはあえて訳さなくても良いと思います。 「私はニュージャージーの郊外で育ちました。その当時、私の学校では女子は二級市民扱いでした。」

Yeah i live in a small village which is even smaller than a town :P but other bigger towns are near my village though and I've been at school for 3 weeks now, my last school holiday finished the 6 of January so I've been at school since then.
