以下のような訳はいかがでしょう。 磨耗(摩耗) 作用面から、物質が進行的に失われることをいう。物体表面における相対運動の結果として起こる。 注記： 1. 摩耗は通常は有害なものであるが、それが穏やかなもの(に由来するもの)であれば有益なこともある。ならし運転(なじみ)が例として挙げられる。 2. 顕著な塑性変形がおきるならその物体は用をなさなくなることもある。小規模の塑性変形はほとんどの摩耗プロセスで起きるものである。 3. 英語で一般に"Wear"という場合、機械的な摩耗のほかに化学的、熱的な効果を含む。 *"operating surface"を「作用面」と訳しましたが、このような技術用語があるのか分かりません。この部分、自信なしとさせてください。 なお余談ですが、「見てもらいませんか」は「見てもらえませんか」が正しいです。
