みなさんの御意見も納得の行くもので、わたしも、contended というのは、不自然に思います。しかし、よく文章を読み返して見ると、looking forward... の部分がうまく解釈できていないように思えます。 わたしは、この文章は二つの部分に分かれると思います。 The women are either busy, contended housewives and mother The women are looking forward to becoming so この二つの文章を、or が結んで重文にしているように見えます。 either を接続詞と考えると、either A or B という構文になってるということになります。しかし、この文章は、前の A は名詞ですが、後の B は動詞句です。釣り合っていないように思えます。これは、either busy, contended housewives and mother で句になっているような感じがします。しかし、either A and B というのはないはずなのです。either を、接続詞と考えると、これは、looking の前の or と連関句を構成していることになりますが、違う解釈も可能ではないかと、私見ですが、わたしは考えてみます。 文法的には、この either は、代名詞である可能性はないでしょうか。無論、文章を読んで行くとき、either は、接続詞としてまず考えられるのです。しかし、or 以降に続く文章が、either を接続詞と考えるとおかしいので、and mother 辺りで、構文の切り替え把握が行われているのではないでしょうか。この文章を読んだ後、あらためて、この文章の構文を分析すると、文法的には、either は代名詞になるということです。 そこで、こういう間違っている可能性のある解釈で文章を読んで見ると、前半部分は、「日本の女性は、多忙で、競争心に駆られた主婦や母親である」となり、後半部分は、「さもなければ、そのような主婦や母親になることを待ち望んでいる女性（少女・娘）たちである」となります。強引な解釈ですが、こういう読み方で文章を訳してみると： 「日本の女性は、多忙で、競争心に駆られた主婦や母親であり、またそうでない女性たちも、そのような主婦や母親になることを待ち望んでいる」となります。 「そうでない女性たち」というような言葉はどこにもありませんが、The women are either.. という文章と、The women are looking forward.. という二つの文章が省略されて一つにされているのだと考えることができます。つまり、The women are either.. or they are looking.. という文章だということになります。（この場合、構文的には、either という代名詞が、後の housewives and mother と同格ということになります。……ただ、either A or B の構文だと考えても、以上のような訳が出てくるような気がします）。 housewives が複数で、mother が何故単数なのか、何か意味があるのだと思いますが、そこまで分かりません。（mother は、属性的な名詞として単数なのだとも思えます）。
