For example,it is suggested that animals do not modify their signals to address one individual rather than another, and in this sense that they address no one in particular. This is certainly not true in specific instances, such as the exchange of calls between mating birds,or between the African honey guide and the honey badger that follows the bird. But even where it is true,in insect colonies and hunting packs,it is a characteristic of social organization and not of language. The animal addresses no one in particular because it addresses everyone in the community. The only individual that the animal does not know how to address is itself;so that its shortcoming is not that it cannot turn monologue into dialogue, but that it cannot turn it into soliloquy. The bee that tries to dance in an almost empty hive fails to read its context, but the dance remains a signal and not a private act.For the dance has been evolved by a process of natural selection whose effect is constantly to improve its social efficiency. The same pressure of selection has shaped all animal calls and gestures to make them,in general, signals that instruct the whole community.

The illusion of unlimited natural abundance fostered by the frontier myth is cause for concern. Does America or any nation have unlimited natural abundance? There Will Be blood(2007) shows the ppioneer as a greedy capitalist who becomes rich on oil. Today's West faces serious environmental problems. The Red Desert is an area of 24,000 square kilometers in the southern part of Wyoming. The world's largest herd of elk and many species of rare plants and birds live here, but the area is threatened with dedstruction by oil and gas drilling. Over 5,000 wells have been sunk in recent years, and the U.S. government has approved 15,000 more. In Alaska, former governor and recent vice-presidential canadidate Sarah Palin, who portrays herself as an independent frontier politician supports oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the home of threatened polar bears and caribou. Palin even filed suit against the U.S. government because its Endangered Species Act blocks drilling in the state. With such policies, the American West many soon look like the Alaska shown in The Simpsons Movie (2007) a landscape of oil wells and pipelines, where each resident is brided with "a thousand dollars to allow oil companies to ravage state's natural beauty."

At first the Egyptians simply marked the riverbank to measure the height of the Nile. But it wasn't long before the Egyptians invented measuring devices. We call them nilometers. Some looked like a giant yardstick made from marble. Other nilometers were even more elaborate. Workers dug staircases into wells and erected engraved pillars marked to gauge how high the water rose. After the flood months, when the water finally receded and left behind rich, black earth, farmers scattered their seeds, the first of several plantings. The second season―peret―had begun. Farmers lifted water from the steady flowing river with shadufs, devices that looked like catapults. With a bucket for dipping on one end of a pole, and a counterweight to make lifting easy on the other, the shadufs creaked and groaned while farmers raised and pivoted the buckets to fill channels that snaked through their gardens. Farmers tended their fields with care into the third season―shemu. During shemu the level of the Nile dropped, and many side channels dried up. The land parched and the desert seemed to close in. The red sands inched toward the villages. Near the end of shemu, Egyptians began to fret and worry. Would the Nile ever rise again? Had the gods forgotten to release the waters? They sang, "they dread him who creates the heat," and they sacrificed birds and gazelles for the return of the Nile's floodwaters. And then the cycle repeated. "Hail to thee, O Nile! Who...comes to give life to Egypt!"

"I left Tangier, my birthplace, the 13th of June 1325 with the intention of making the pilgrimage [to Mecca].... to leave all my friends both female and male, to abandon my home as birds abandon their nests." So begins an old manuscript in a library in Paris -- the travel journal of Ibn Battuta. Almost two centuries before Columbus, this young Moroccan set off for Mecca, returning home three decades later as one of history's great travelers. Driven by curiosity, he journeyed to remote corners of the Islamic world, traveling through 44 modern countries, three times as far as Marco Polo.

Now the power needed for the minimum speed increases more rapidly than the weight of the machine. So the larger aeroplane, which weights sixty-four times as much as the smaller, needs one hundred and twenty-eight times its horsepower to keep up. Applying the same principles to the birds, we find that the limit to their size is soon reached. An angel whose muscles developed no more power weight for weight than those of an eagle or a pigeon would require a breast projecting for about four feet to house the muscles engaged in working its wings, while to economize in weight, its legs would have to be reduced to mere stilts.

(7) But perhaps the story that Hatshepsut would most want us to know is about the trade expedition to Punt. The story is drawn in detail on the walls of the temple where she was worshipped after death. The story shows how Hatshepsut added to Egypt's wealth by focusing her reign on trade and exploration. It shows that with Hatshepsut as king, there was a whole lot of flourishing going on in Egypt. There was ma'at. A series of pictures and captions tell the story of the journey to Punt. (8) Five sailing ships manned with soldiers, officials, and rowers leave Egypt. Whe they arrive off foreign shores they anchor and all climb into small boats loaded with trinkets for trade. While making their way through the jungle of ebony and palm tree, the Egyptian traders come across a village. Beehive-shaped huts made from woven palm fronds sit up on stilts so far above the ground that the only way to get inside is to climb ladders leading from the ground up to the doorways. (9) The exact location of Punt is not known, but the animals in the scenes are clearly African. There are leopards, rhinoceros, and giraffes. The carvings show trees full of monkeys. Scholars believe that the expedition took place in the spring because the birds in the pictures are nesting.

Storks are beautiful birds with black-and-white wings and long black bills. They used to live along rivers, wetlands and rice fields. For food, they ate fish, frogs and grasshoppers. The number of storks began decreasing during the Meiji Period due to hunting. Also, farmers used agriculture chemicals after World War II, and this destroyed the storks’ food supply. In 1956, the government designated storks as a specially protected species. In 1965, Hyogo Prefecture opened a special facility where researchers could breed storks in captivity. However, it was already too late to save them. In 1971, the last wild stork died in Toyooka City and the species became extinct in Japan. The people there were deeply saddened by this. In 1985, six young wild storks were sent from Khabarovsk, Russia. If the storks had not been given to the facility, the breeding project, 118 storks had been hatched by the time the first five were released. September 24, 2005 was an historic day. It was the first attempt to release storks from the facility into the wild. After more than thirty years, the people of Toyooka could welcome the storks back to Japan.
DECK CARGO AND LIVE ANIMALS All goods stated herein to be carried on deck, and live animals, birds or fish are received, handled, stowed, carried, kept and discharged at Merchant's risk and the Carrier shall not be liable for loss thereof, damage or delay whatsoever and howsoever occurring even though resulting from unseaworthiness of the ship or from the negligence of the Carrier, his servants or agents or in case of deviation of the ship. 「All goods stated herein to be carried on deck,」の最後の「,」が気になりますが・・・ どう解釈したらよいか、アドバイスいただけないでしょうか。

ラジオ英会話のテキストの文章の一部に、 「The birds paid no heed to the Swallow's words, and by and by the hemp grew up and was made into cord, and of the cord nets were made, and many a bird that had despised the Swallow's advise was caught in the nets made out of that very hemp.」 とあるのですが、and of the cord nets were madeの部分のofの役割がわかりません。

主語がIの時、am、haveとなる。 主語がheの時、is、hasとなる。 (1)an eventの時、is、hasですよね。 an eventsの時、are、hasですよね。 It is one of the most important events that has happend this year. thatはeventsに掛かっているので、 hasの動詞で正解ではないのでしょうか? という問題で、 (the number、a number、lots、a good deal) of tropical birds here is amazing. lotsは何処かで聞いたので分かるのですが、 a numberやa good dealはどうして違うのでしょうか? a number is、a good deal is、は駄目なのでしょうか? numbers、good dealsなら分かるのですが… (3)most of my friendsが主語の場合、 hasではなく、haveと書かれているのですが、 複数形なのでhasではないのでしょうか?

When automobiles first began to appear on the roads and streets of this country they did not have horns of any kind. The noise they made and the moderate speed at which they went made horns unnecessary. But in time it was felt that a warning device was needed. The first such signal was a hand-operated horn consisting of a rubber bulb on one end of a brass trumpet. In 1908 an inventor secured a patent on a horn that was electrically operated. He coined Klaxon as the trade-mark for his new product, and this word has now become popular. Klaxon is based upon the Creek verb klazein, which is related to the Latin word clangere from which "clang" comes. The Greek verb means to make a sound of some kind, its precise meaning depending on the source of the sound. When birds are referred to, it means "to scream," as the eagles and herons do. When dogs are the source of the sound, it means "to bark or bay." If things such arrows in a quiver are being talked of, klazein means "to clash or rattle." If the wind is spoken of, it means "to whistle." If people are referred to, the verb means "to shout or scream." It would be difficult to coin a word that has in it more of the element of sound than does Klaxon.

Later, Mary Lou reads a short piece of text from her book. As she does so, the listener can hear how each piece tells a little about a bird and gives it a personality. “Hi, my name is Ossie the Osprey,”she begins. “I live in rivers, lakes, and coastal waterway.” She then continues with the next bird. “Hi, I'm olivia the Owl,”she reads,“I give six deep hoots.” The book is beautifully illustrated and both easy and interesting for children to read. The additional advantage with Mary Lou's book is that it is also educational. It is unusual for a young girl to feel so strongly about a hobby. Has bird-watching changed Mary Lou at all? In many ways, it has not changed her in the least; she still plays with her brother and sister and does the things that other children do. But since she became so involved with birds, something about her is slightly different. She explains in her own words: “Now I observe more of the world than I did when I was younger. I feel more attached. I feel that everything around me is important. I look at everything I can, because it might be something different that what I think it is.” This young birdwatcher and author now knows that things are not always what they appear to be. Each new thing she sees might be something exciting and different. For this curious young ‘Bird Girl,’everything might just be another chance to learn something new!

(文章はアルクの英辞郎から適当に拾ってきたものです) Another reason for not lending is the bank regulation which states <that> the total assets of the bank must equal 8% or more of the amount of a particular loan before it will lend the money, and it is often said of banks that "they will lend you an umbrella when the sun is shining, but take it back when it rains." First of all, in reponse to the passage in the November article which said <that> the photographs of the "oil-soaked sea birds" and the "oil spills" (New York Times, January 26, 1991) which appeared during the Gulf War were not the results of Iraqi military but of UN military air strikes, the ambassador stated, "That's not what happened at all. In short, it is a book which proves <that>, fundamentally, human beings have an ugly nature and it becomes particularly visible in people in public office where there is no competition.
