改めて「in」と「later」の違いについて

まず、「in」とよく混同しがちなのは「after」です。 前置詞と使われる点が共通しているのですが、「in」は「at the end of the time in the future」を、「at」は「when a particular amount of time has passed」を表します。 前者が「単純に時間が経過した後」に視点が置かれているのに対し、後者は「特定の時間が経過する過程」に視点が置かれているようです。次の例文で、その違いが分かるのではないでしょうか。 (1) I'll be with you in a few minutes. ・・・「単に時間がちょっと経ってから」 (2) After months of argument they decided to divorce. ・・・「いろいろと争いがあった後」 ある英々辞典では、下記のような違いが示されています。 'After' followed by a time period is more often used to talk about past events. 'In' followed by a time period is more often used to talk about future events. 多少の例外はあるものの、「in」は未来指向、「after」は過去を指向する傾向があるようです。 ２番目にお尋ねの「later」は副詞的な使われ方をする点において「in」とは本質的に異なります。基本的な使われ方は下記の３つです。 ※ 「... later」で【過去】のある時点を起点にして起こったことを示す (3) She was happy when she got married, but six months later she was divorced. ※ 「...later」で【未来】のある時点を起点にして起こることを表す (4) Ken will arrive on Monday, and Mika will arrive about a week later. ※ 「later」単独で【現在】を起点にした起こることを表す (5) See you later. 具体的な期間を表す語句が含まれた「... later」を、「（現在から・・・経った）後で」という意味で用いることはありません。 (6) I'll see you in a few day.（○） (7) I'll see you a few days later.（×） なお、「in」に「at the end of the time in the future」の意味が含まれるようになった経緯を解明するのは、なかなか難しい問題です。 おそらく「She learned French in two years.」の「in」から来ているのでしょうが、そもそも「in」に「during the period」の意味が含まれるようになった経緯自体も不明です。 その謎を研究することは大変興味深いことですが、望むような結果を得られるまでにはかなりの時間と労力が必要でしょう。それまでは、実際の使い方を理解して正しく使用することが現実的な考え方なのでしょう。 ご参考になれば・・・。

英英辞典での『cite』の意味として、 ・to mention in support , proof , confirmation ； refer to as an example ： He cited many instances of abuse of power. というのが載っておりました。 http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/cite 私は『in』を「中で」「途中で」などのニュアンスで理解しているのですが、 ここでの『in』がどのような意味で使われているのかがよく分かりません。 意味もよく取れません。 むしろ『as』などの方が適当なのではないかと思うのですが。 「in support」「in proof」「in confirmation」になぜ『in』を用いるのかを 暗記ではなく、何とか説明・理解する方法などないでしょうか？ よろしくお願い致します。

明晰なお答え、まことに畏れ入ります。 いっそのこと、「later」が単独でも使えなければ、よほどすっきりしたものを（笑）。 何か「起点」を示すような語句といっしょにならば現在時制の文でも使用可能だという点も私を誤らせる病根です（笑）。
