など、if 以下に仮定法過去が続く表現についておうかがいします。
このwouldは通常、どう説明されているのでしょうか。
たとえば、Would you mind if I smoked?の場合、
１．if 以下、つまり、タバコを吸うのを「ありえない話」と話し手が仮定している → あたりまえにタバコを吸うことを前提としていないから丁寧な表現になる
２．If I smoked にはまったく関係なく、would自体に相手と距離を置く意味がある、言い換えれば、言外に「もしこういうことを言って許されるのでしたら・・・」というもうひとつの if節 がある。
３．いずれでもなし
私の考えは、仮定法の基本公式「if＋Ｓ＋過去形、Ｓ＋would, should, could, might～」の通りであることから１、と思ったのですが、通常、このwouldはどう説明されることが多いのか、気になりました。
教えていただければと思います。

Why people study?
What do you answer if you are asked why do you study?
To get a good job? To earn many money?
Maybe many young students answer YES.
It is said that there are many smart people in Japan. I also think so.
However, do you think that if a number of smart people increase, which give a chance to develop in Japan?
The answer is NO. I think that talent is much more important than studying.
Of course, studying is important thing, but looking for your own talent is more important.

と考えてこう並べたのですが、正解は前述のtell them which way is up でした。
次に類似した問題が出たとき同じ間違いを繰り返しそうなので、私の回答がどうしてだめなのかということと、回答の考え方を教えて欲しいです。よろしくお願いします。

What is necessary to make people impressed?
Are there any common things when we are impressed?
For example, do you feel sad when you find out a abandoned dog? As for myself, I don’t feel sad. However, I asked my sister about it. She said that she feel so sad, and how about you?? Like this , we usually think about things by a different sense.
So, when are you impressed?? In my opinion, that is when your imagination is exceed, which give birth of moving your heart.
It is the most important thing if you want someone to be impressed is understanding his/her character.
