いつもお世話になります。今回も宜しくお願いします。 Our present age of pessimism follows a quite different period of optimism and hope ― a period when man believed in himself…. ある英文なのですが、―以下のa periodはthe periodの方が適切 のように感じてしまうのですが、これは何故aなのでしょうか？ あくまでも、たくさんある中の、『ある』期間 だからなのですか？ 教えてください。

＞Our present age of pessimism follows a quite different period of optimism and hope ― a period when man believed in himself…. a quite different period of optimism and hopeのことを、新しく定義していて、その「新しく定義すれば」のような感覚を出したいからでしょう。 または、the を使うと、多少でも強調した感覚が出るので、それを避けたい、つまり、「人間が自分自身を信頼できた時代がそういえばあったなあ」のように、距離感のようなものを出したいと言う感覚から不定冠詞を使っているのでは？ ところで、この英文、明治大学CPTというものに載っている問題文ですね。

こんにちは、お世話になります。 J.L.CarrのThe Battle of Polocks Crossingを読んでいます。 背景：主人公ジョージは、面接でなぜ１２ヶ月間も異国に住み、教える気になったのか聞かれると And Geoge having cleverly anticipated that this question was bound to be asked, uttered a prepared statement which boiled down to a belief that he would 『return a diffarent man』. するとジョージは絶対にこの質問は聞かれると利巧に予想しており、前もって用意しておいた言葉、つまるところ彼が『別人に戻れる／別人になって戻れる であろうから』という意見を話したのだった なんだか、すごい基本的な事だと思いますが、このReturn a different manは、「別人に戻れる」だとなんだか変な気がするので、（元が別人？）「別人になって戻れる」という意味かな～とか思ったり、、、。 ものすごい簡単な英文なのに、混乱しています。 どういう意味なのでしょうか？ またこんな簡単な英文で『？』となってしまった私は、文法の何処を私は復習するべきなんでしょうか？ よろしくお願い致します。
