専門家ではないので参考程度にしてください。 keep～ingで「～し続ける」意味があります。 我々が待っている間、そのドライバーはエンジンを作動させたままだった。 知覚動詞なら原形もありかなと思いますが。

今、文法を復習しようと参考書をやっているのですが分詞の付帯状況が説明を読んでもいまいち納得できません。 詳しく書くと()をうめる問題で １番 He got out of the car with the engine (running). ２番 He was sitting in the chair with his eyes (closed). のようになるらしいのですが、なぜrunningでrunでないのか？ closedでclosingではいけないのかがわかりません。 和訳してもピンとこないのです。 解説では直前の(代)名詞と文章を作ってみて能動ならingで受動ならedと書かれていたのですが、the engineとhis eyesの間のどこに能動と受動を分ける差があるのが理解できません。つまりこういうことです。 The engine was running.○ The engine was run.× His eyes were closing.× His eyes were closed.○ がわかりません。 この文法書も三週目なのですが未だに悩み続けています。 初歩的ですがどうか教えて下さるとうれしいです。

She looked excited when she saw her son after 2 years’ absence この文のabsenceの訳がわかりません。 Some people leave their cars with the engines running when they go shopping for a few minutes. この文のrunningの部分はranではダメですか？ engines とrunの関係を考える問題なんですが、 エンジンがかけているより、エンジンがかけられているのほうがいいぎするのですが、おかしいですか？ 教えてください。

以下について教えてください。 (1) I know a boy (call) Tom. ( )の中を適する形に直す問題です。答えはcalledです。 これはcallingでは間違いですか？「トムを呼んでいる少年を知っています」とは ならないのでしょうか。 (2) (1)のように現在分詞や過去分詞に直す問題で、どちらにすればいいのかわからない時があります。修飾される名詞が「行動する側」なのか「される側」なのかで見分けていたのですが、それがあてはまらないようなこともあるように思います。より確実な判断方法はあるのでしょうか？ (3) with＋O＋分詞で「Oを～して」 (2)の質問とかぶるかもしれませんが Some people leave the car with the engine ( ) when they go shopping for a while. 答えはrunnningです。エンジンは「かけられるもの」なので過去分詞かと思ったのですが、runnningになるのはなぜでしょうか。 (4)各組の文がほぼ同じ内容になるようにする問題です。 People use this expression frequently.
