1. も 2. も、その could は can という助動詞の過去形です。「可能」 を表す表現に用います。それが過去形になっているだけのことです。 どちらの文も現在形に書き換えてみると分かります。 1) He was such a fast runner that none of us could catch up with him. → He is such a fast runner that none of us can catch up with him. (彼は足が速いので、誰も彼には追いつけない) 2) This morning I left the house early so that I could catch the first train. → I leave the house early so that I can catch the first train. (私は始発の列車に間に合うように早い時間に家を出る) > １はnotを含むからかなと思いますが・・・ not があるからとか否定文だからだとかいうこととは無関係です。

「彼女のおかげで、宿題を終わらすことができた。」を英訳すると、Thanks to his help,she was able to finish her homework. となるようですが、was able to の代わりに could を使ってもかまわないでしょうか。「具体的に～できた。」は be able to の方が良いと聞いたことがあります。「友達に追いつけるように急いだ。」は、I hurried so (that) I could catch up with my friends. となるようですが、could の代わりに was able to が使えますか。参考書を見ても両者の使い分けが良くわかりません。お願いします。

How could I do that?は一人称ですよね。 これを「彼がどうそれをやったらいいか（という事を）あなたに聞きたいそうです。」と言う文章が必要なんですが、これって通じますか？ He wants you to tell him how could he do that・・・ ちょっと至急です。

I could have swórn that…で 「確か…のはずだ」 となると辞書であるのですが、 どうしてcould have done の形が使われているのか理解できないです。 これは仮定法過去を使って、 断言したいくらいだったが、断言できない今は、、。というニュアンスを表現しているという理解で合っているのか分からないです。 この表現の解釈の解説宜しくお願いします。 ≪ジーニアス辞書≫ Swear 項目 ▶I could have sworn I left my glasses on the desk. 確かめがねを机の上に置いたと思ったが Could 項目 [程度を大げさに示して]…したいくらいだった, …といってもいいほどだった ▶I could have cried for joy. うれしくて泣きたいくらいだった.

こんにちは Though I ran as fast as possible, I couldn't catch the bus. という分を分詞を使って書換えなさいという問題です。 質問１． 日本語で訳すと「出来るだけ早く走ったけれども、バスに間に合わなかった」“I ran as fast as possible” は“couldn't catch the bus”よりも前の時制、つまり過去完了のように思えるのですが、 Though I have run as fast as possible, I couldn't catch the bus. とするのは間違えでしょうか。 質問2． 理由(since)に変えた場合はどうなりますか？ 1. Since I ran as fast as possible, I could catch the bus. 2. Since I have run as fast as possible, I could catch the bus. 譲渡・理由・条件・時 などの接続詞がついた分を日本語で考えると時制が分からなくなってしまいます。 なにか 判断する良い方法はないでしょうか。 よろしくお願い致します。
