若干修正してみました。 ○○ took first place in overall ranking based on each country's ranking. 各国に特にこだわりがなければ、 ○○ ranked first in (the) worldwide ranking of... in 2008. のような表現で、意味が若干違いますが、おおよそ意図はつたわるように思います。 worldwide: everywhere in the world

The Battle of Salaita Hill was the first large-scale engagement of the East African Campaign of the First World War to involve British, Indian, Rhodesian and South African troops.
