アメリカに３５年ほど住んでいる者です。 akatoraさんの回答に誤解を招く説明がありましたので、書かせてもらいます。 ごめんなさい。 まず、outskirtsですか、これは、シカゴ市内であるけど、はずれの方、つかり、隣の町との境界線に近いところと言う意味です。 a suburbというと、シカゴ市と接近した（隣り合う必要はない）町のひとつのことを言います。 suburbsとは漠然とした郊外という意味です。 つまり、シカゴ市内ではなく市外／郊外と言う事なんですね。 そこで、一つ説明しなくてならないのは、町の構成です。 つまり、東京の中に町がありますが、アメリカでは、市の中に町はありえないのです。 ですから、近郊と言えば、その町の外の町ということになり、outskirtsは町の中となるわけです。 これでいいでしょうか。

こんにちは。つかぬことをお伺いしますが、もしよければご教示下さい。 「私は名古屋の郊外に住んでいます」 I live in the suburbs of Nagoya. I live in a suburb of Nagoya. これはどちらも使われる表現だと思うのですが、何かニュアンス的な違いはあるのでしょうか？

Thank you, sir. http://www.gdrc.org/uem/japan/musashino.html に Musashino City is a suburb of Tokyo... という文があります。 武蔵野市は東京の「中」にありますね。「接近」ではないですね。 そうすると、Ganbatteruyoさんの a suburb の説明と合っていませんね。 Confusing!
