(1)最初のreachingの意味がわかりません。 「クルド人反逆者から食料や燃料などを…」だと思うのですが、このreachingは必要なのでしょうか？ よくわからないのですが、reachingで「達する、差し迫っている」のニュアンスだとしたらthe reaching Kurdish rebelsでは駄目なのでしょうか？ (2)２つ目のreachingの後ろにtoがあると駄目なのでしょうか？ 「人口の多い町に彼ら(PKK)が達するのを防ぐためイラクはPKKの動きを制約するだろう」という風に理解しました。 この場合prevent+人+from+reachingなのでreachingはわかるのですが、最初見た時reaching populated townsと少しわかりにくく感じました。 自動詞、他動詞の違いが関係してくるのかもしれませんが後ろにtoを置いては駄目なのでしょうか？ お願いします。

こんにちは。（１）１行目の「keep」は、この場合、３行目の「prevent」と全く同じ意味です。クルド人勢力に燃料その他が届かないように...の意です。 （２）「reach」は２つとも「たどりつく、とどく」などの意味の他動詞ですので、このままでよいです。自動詞のときは「のびる」というような意味なので、「to」を使って他動詞のように用いることはないと思います。

話をわかりやすくするために、別の例で書いてみます。 ●Keep a safe distance from moving machinery.（危ないから，動いている機械から離れていなさい。） ここでの「moving」の意味が「動詞的」であることに気をつけてください。ですから、「reaching」も「動詞（動名詞）」であると考えるのです。厳密に考えれば、「現在分詞＋名詞」という説明でなければならないかもしれませんが、どっちにせよ、「名詞」であると考えないでください。 また、前の方に、「keep」があるのに気づきませんでしたか？ つまり、食品などがKurdish rebels.Zebariに届かないようにしている（keep ... from ...）としているから、このreaching（動名詞）がないと意味が通じないおそれがあります。 さて、２番目ですが、これも別の例文を挙げてみると、 ●Her blond hair reaches to her shoulders. （彼女の金髪は肩まで垂れている。） この例文の意味わかりますね？ つまり、「to」をつけることで、「reach」の範囲を決めているわけです。しかし、ここでは、「援助する、手を広げる、すべての町へ届ける」というような意味なので、「to」をつけたら、意味が変わるおそれが出てくるわけです。 他の詳しい回答をも読んで、英文の読み方に慣れてください。

回答ありがとうございました。 keepもpreventと同じように使うのですね。知らなかったです。。。 クルド人から食料を維持する～のような意味だと思っていたのですが、そもそもその訳自体間違っていたようですね。。。 reachは自動詞だと「伸びる」のようなニュアンスなのですね。 「届く」だから大丈夫だと思ったのですが、駄目なようですね。。。 ありがとうございました。
