今日よりも(以前の方が)もっとsoということはなかった。 soはThe division between the two worlds has always been fairly clearly definedのあたりを指していると思います。 when ( instead of the distinction being based on fluctuating artistic taste )it is fairly firmly based on economic consideration. はtodayの説明だと思います。 ところでこの文章、コンマはもともとおおかったのでしょうか？ なんか多すぎる気がしますが。 ※副詞的な要素を省くと The division has always been fairly clearly defined, and never more so than today, when it is fairly firmly based on economic consideration. となると思います。 has beenのあたりは過去で、todayやその説明部分のisは現在のことですね。 問題となっているnever more soには動詞が省略されていて時制が直接は分からないけれど、たぶん、has beenと同じ時制でしょう。

hikaru_macさんこんにちは。どうもレスありがとうございます。 ＞今日よりも(以前の方が)もっとsoということはなかった。soはThe division between the two worlds has always been fairly clearly definedのあたりを指していると思います。 never more so than todayのところの省略を補って考えると(The division has always been fairly clearly defined) never more so than today だと思ったのですが、これであってますかね。上のように考えると、soが指しているのhikaru_macさんの仰っているところだと考えるとギクシャクしてくるのですが・・・。それともこう考えるのはは間違いなのでしょうか。 ＞ところでこの文章、コンマはもともとおおかったのでしょうか？なんか多すぎる気がしますが。 私も多いなあと思っていたのですがどうやらもう一度見ても同じように売ってありました。逆に読みにくい漢字がしますけれども。 ＞問題となっているnever more soには動詞が省略されていて時制が直接は分からないけれど、たぶん、has beenと同じ時制でしょう。 主語はThe division でいいんですよね。そうすると上のように補って考えるのは間違いで The division has been never more so than today が正しくてsoの部分にclearly definedが入ると考えて方が良さそうですね。失礼いたしました。
