序数と基数？
文章の訳に困っています。 For the second straight year,Fortune magazine in 1999 ranked Singapore first in its survey of Asian cities that are most suitable for doing business. この最初の部分、'For the second straight year'がどう訳していいかわかりません。（なぜ、secondでなければならないのかわかりません。）わかる方、ぜひ回答お願いします。

＞1998年に言及する意味は もちろん，「1998年に引き続いて」を表すためです。straight「連続した」の「２つめ」が1999年であり，「1998年，1999年と連続して」という意味になります。 straight が「掲載された」のが連続を表している，とは解釈できません。for the second straight year という副詞句が修飾するのは，ranked Singapore first という部分であり，「掲載する」にあたる表現ではありません。したがって，「1998年に引き続いて，1999年，1位にランクされた」という意味になります。 for は for two years「２年間（ずっと）」のような言い方がなじみやすいと思いますが，「～に際して」「～の分に関しては」という感覚で用いることも可能です。

直感だけですが, second straight year と year が単数になっていることからして「連続している年の 2番目」って意味かなぁ? 1998, 1999年と連続していて, その 2番目である 1999年について述べているって感じ?

second straightで辞書引いたら「２年連続」っていう意味でいいみたいですよ。
補足
回答ありがとうございます。 ですが、なぜsecondでなければいけないのか、それがよくわからないんです。どうしてもsecondには「２番目」という印象があります。「二番目に連続の年？」とか、悩んでしまいます。できれば、そのことについても詳しく知りたいです。
