It was a wonderful valley, full of happy little animals and flowering trees, and there was a clear narrow river that came down from the mountain, looped round Moominhouse and disappeared in the direction of another valley, where no doubt other little animals wondered where it came from. 合っているでしょうか？ 「そこは、すばらしい谷で、幸せそうな小さな動物たちや花の咲いた樹木でいっぱいだった。山からムーミンの家を取り囲むように澄んだ狭い川が流れ、その川はどこからやってきたのかわからない他の小さな動物たちがきっと住んでいるに違いない別の谷の方角へと消えていった。」

No3さんのご回答を拝見し、納得しました！ なせwonderedであって、were wondering でないのかと、ぼんやり考えていました。 川は何処から流れてくるのだろうかと不思議がっているに違いないの方が、解釈に無理がないですね、 間違った解答をしたことをお詫びいたします。

お疲れ様です。 ご質問のとおり、whereのところからちょっと意味不明な感じがしますよね。 konnyakuさんの書かれているとおり、「そこは、・・・澄んだ狭い川が流れ」までは、合っています。問題は、それ以下の文章ですよね。 「きっと住んでいるに違いない」というところが問題で、「住んでいる」という言葉が英文にはないと思います。 ですので、no doubtはwonderにかかるのではないでしょうか？そうであれば、where以下は、「（その川は）どこから始まっているのか、他の小さな動物たちにもきっとわからないに違いない、もうひとつの谷の方向に消えていった。」と訳すことができるのではないでしょうか？ 全体的には、合っていると思いますが、最後のところの川の消えていく方向のところだけ気になりました。 住んでる人や動物たちもよくわからないっていうのがムーミン谷らしいですよね♪

他の動物たちは、どこにいるのでしょう。No.3の回答を見ますと、他の谷にいるようです。whereは"in the direction of another valley"のことを言っているようです。"no doubt"は"wonder"にかかるのですね。分かりやすい説明ありがとうございました。

それは幸せそうな小さな動物たちや花の咲いた樹木でいっぱいのすばらしい谷だった。 山から流れ出て、ムー民の家を取り囲み、どこから来たんだと思われるに違いない他の小さな動物たちがいる別の谷のほうへ消えていく澄みきった細い川があった。 最後のほうは、other little animals が主語になってて訳しにくかったので、分かるように訳してみました。あってるかどうかは分かりません・・

英語を書いていてふと気づいたのですが、関係副詞whereをどういうときに使えばいいのか、私の中でどんよりしていてはっきりと分からないのです。 whereは場所を表すとき用いるのですよね。それだと、 コーヒーは、人を眠りから妨げたり、独特の臭いを持っていたり、また集中力を高めるなど、多くの特質を持っている。 という日本語の場合、関係副詞を使うとしたら Coffee has a lot of wonderful qualities where it keeps people from sleeping, has a particular smell, makes us improve concentration, and so on. となるしかないですよね。 調べたところ、whereは状況・立場などが先行詞にくる、と書いてあります。しかし、pualityはどう見ても状況ではないですよね。 それではwhereにはどういう定義が来るのでしょうか。よろしくお願いします。
