こんにちは、いつもお世話になります。 Colleen McCulloughのANTONY AND CLEOPATRAを読んでいて、 慣用句らしき「The light in them died」という文に遭遇しました。 しかし、辞書にこの慣用句は、載っておりません。 そこで考えたのですが「light in one's eyes」という慣用句に手を加えたものでしょうか？ 目は二つあるから、「Them=one's eyes」と考え、 The light in them died＝The light in one's eyes diedは「それら（両目）から(希望の）輝きが消えた」＝「がっかりした」ということですよね？ ========================================================== 参考までに前後の文脈です。 背景：Antiochにアントニウスと共に居たクレオパトラの下にエジプトから手紙が届く。 クレオパトラの長男カエザリオンがもんだいを起こして手に余っているという。 急遽エジプトに船で帰国するクレオパトラ。 港に着くと、侍従長のApollodorus一人が待っていた。 カエザリンが港で待っていてくれなかった、、と気がついた所で、この文が出てきます。 Apollodorus was waiting on the jetty in the Royal Harbour, but not, her eager eyes discovered, her elderst son. Have you seen the film "The Last Samurai," where an American guy appears. The woman at the house didn't like him and wished that the guy would leave her home soon. But the guy was impressed with her kind and elegant attitudes. Foreigners may have difficulties judging if the kindness is superfacial or not, which Japanese can do to most extent.
