#1 で回答されている通りだと思います。 one either side で 「両側に１つづつ」 という感じでしょう。there is one lift on either side を簡単にしたものだとでも考えればいいのではないでしょうか。

空いてる(=使えるor塞がってないetc)リフトは2っつだけど、メイン(主要or本or主etc)階段のどちらか一方の側が博物館行きさ。 私は以上の様に解釈、添付画像に沿って説明。 ソノ場所にはmain stairs とsub stairs が有り、何個か有るリフト(添付画像では6っ個)の中(うち)、空いてるのが2っつで(残りは使用中)、main階段の両側に有るとゆうことだから、2っつは "赤"or"橙"とゆうこと。 で、赤or橙の中、どちらか(一方)で下りれば博物館に行けるよ・・・・とゆうことでしょう。 詰まり、 >There are two lifts available、 one either side of the main stairs down to the museum．と書き表しているヒトは左に有る赤、右に有る橙、どちらのリフトが博物館で止まるかは判っていない・・のが私達には理解出来ます。 文の作者は、赤か橙どっちかで下りれば博物館行きだ・・と言ってるのです。

Daily Yomiuri で「電車男」の書評を読んでいたら冒頭の文が こうなっていました。 It either captured the zeitgeist or was one of those stories that was too good to be true. 記事全体は、この話は時代よく映し出しているという趣旨でした。 この場合、筆者が冒頭の文で言わんとしているところは、 「時代の気分を捉えたか、もしくはよくあるうますぎて信じられない 話のどちらかだ。」と訳すとなにか違和感があります。 either orを bothのように どちらでもOKのように解釈してもよろしいでしょうか？
