普通、直接話法を間接話法に変えるときに yesterday → the day before this → that という変換をする、と習うわけですが、 間接話法で yesterday/this のような単語が使われないわけではありません。 ひとつにはついさっき言ったばかりで場所も同じ、 時間的場所的隔たりもなければそのままです。 もうひとつ、今回のようなストーリーの場合、 ストーリー上で展開していることは 前の日は yesterday ですし、目の前にあるものは this/these です。 だから、この now もストーリー上の過去までにという wife, who had been ill for ～ then ですし、 these もその展開している now までの「この３週間」です。 つまり、yesterday までに、というのが now であり、these three weeks ですが、 申し上げたように、yesterday 自体がストーリー上のものです。

来年関西大学の受験を控えている者です。 いくつか疑問がありますので質問させて頂きます。 「英文は返り読みせず、左から右へと読む」 これはよく言われてる事で、私も英語の受験勉強をし始めてからずっと心がけてきました。 しかし、かなり込み合っている講文になると頭の中で整理できなくなって返り読みせざるを得なくなります。 例えばこの文はヴィジュアル英文解釈にあった文ですが、 Only yesterday Doctor Storm, the family physician, who was in attendence on his wife, ill now for these weeks past with a combination of heart disease, kidney poisoning and neurosis, took him aside and said very softly and affectionately as though he were tying to spare his feelings. これで一文なんですが、ここまでくると前半部分がなんだったか忘れがちになって、確認のため文頭に目が行ってしまいます。 何度もヴィジュアル英文解釈は復習してますので、この問題を取り組む時、 ある程度先が予測できてしまいますので、返り読みせずなんとか頭の中で整理できますが、 初見においてこれほど込み合った文が一文で出て来た時、返り読みせず理解できる自信はありません。 こういう場合どう対処すれば良いのでしょう？ 関大の長文は分量が多く、尚且つ問題を解きながら進むとなると、 時間的に正直ギリギリです(現時点での私ですが)。 それとも返り読みしないという事に拘り過ぎでしょうか？ しかし、返り読みするのと、しないのとではやはり進むスピードが違いますし実際そう感じました。 ご意見お待ちしております。 それともう一つ。 単語についてなんですが、明らかに見たことのない単語がちらほらと過去問にあるのですが、 それらの単語は市販されている受験対策用の単語集にも載っていません。 大学入試の問題において、それら単語集を一冊完璧にこなしたとしても、わからない単語が一つもないというのはありえないですか？ そこまで神経質になる必要はないのでしょうか？ こちらも回答お待ちしております。

文法事項で二つ質問です (1)「ここ～年間」という意味で、for～ と for the past～ の違いがよくわかりません。 (2) 「工事はあと三週間もすれば終わるでしょう」 という文で、 The construction work will be finished in another three weeks. となっていましたが、これをwill have been finishedと未来完了形にしてもいいのでしょうか？ 以上２点よろしくお願いします。
