こんにちは。 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix [UK, adult版] p. 637 上の方の文に関してです。 大広間で朝食をとっているハリーの前にフクロウが郵便を届けに来ました。この一年で一度メモを受け取っただけだったので、ハリーは誰からだろうと訝しく思っています。その後の英文です。 'Frowning, he made to take the letter from the owl, but before he could do so, three, four, five more owls had fluttered down beside it and were jockeying for position, treading in the butter adn knocking over the salt as each one attempted to give him their letter first.' "he made to take the letter from the owl"の部分の日本語は"ハリーはフクロウから手紙を受取ろうとした。"とあり"made to"を"tried to"や"attempted to"と同じように"～しようとした"と訳しています。 これまでにも何度か"made to"を"～しようとした"と訳している場面を見たことがあるのですが、辞書をみても"～しようとした"というような解釈を見つけられませんでした。 ここでの"made to"は"tried to"や"attempted to"と同じと考えていいのでしょうか？ それとも"made to""tried to""attempted to"には何か違いがあるのでしょうか？ 教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。

made toは、No1さんが示された辞書が解説するように ＞(2)［II to do］((古))（…）しようとする，し始める He made to speak, but didn't. 彼は話そうとしたが，やめた. 古語になる。だから「古語は死語で現代英語では意味をなさない。」と考えて良いと思う。少し語弊があるかもしれませんが、魔女や魔法使いは中世の時代の話。ハリーポッターの小説で使われる言葉も意図的に古い言葉を使うことで中世の時代を彷彿させる。という事だと思いますよ。

英語基本動詞辞典には S make to do = Ｓ（人）が. . . しようとする（し始める） という項目がちゃんとあって、そこに次のように書かれています。 He made to stop me. 彼は私を止めようとした。 They made to go. 彼らは進み始めた。 He made to reply when I stopped him. 彼は答えようとしたがすかさず私は止めた。 try to , attempt toと同じとまでは言えないでしょうが、似ていると思います。 こちらの方は、単にやろうとする（した）だけでなく、実際にやり始めた感じがします。始まったのですかさずストップしたみたいなのが、先ほどの例文にもあります。 以上、ご参考になればと思います。

ハリーポッターの秘密の部屋（HARRY POTTER and the Chamber of Secrets）の29ページ９から10行目 ”The Weasleys roared with laughter and Harry settled back in his seat,grinning from ear to ear.” from ear to earで口を大きく開けてという意味らしいですが、辞書の例文もgrinを使っているし、grinとセットで使うものなのでしょうか？日本語の「笑う」に相当する単語はsmileやlaughがありますが、この二つではどうなのでしょうか？ 笑っていなくても、例えば「open your mouth from ear to ear 」と言ったりはするのですか？
