こんにちは この場合の as は while と 同じ意味・同じ使い方になります。 ttp://ejje.weblio.jp/content/as ↑ の 「接続詞 ３」 にある ～している時に／～しながら の意味になります。 The men watched as (while/when ) she did this and (as / while / when ) my grandmother was forced to stand before their gloating eyes 訳は回答者さんが書いていらっしゃる通りですよ。 男たちは 彼女がそれをしたり、 私のおばあさんがかれらの悪意に満ちた彼らの目前に立たされているのを 見ていた となります。

watch は他動詞っぽいですが，本来，「じっと見る，見守る」という行為をする，という自動詞用法が先で， 後から watch TV のような他動詞用法が生まれました。 だから，watch this というのでなく， watched as ～で「～した時に，じっと見ていた」 日本語的には「～を見ていた」という感じになります。 訳にあるように，and my grandmother ～の部分は as 節に含まれます。

「as」は多義的、別な言い方をすれば、意味の曖昧な前置詞です。したがってNo.1さん、No.2さんのどちらの解釈でも構わないと思います。as は as であって他の単語ではないので、どう解釈するかの問題です。もっとはっきりさせたいときは、別の単語、表現を使います。 watched her doing ～ 彼女が～しているところを見ていた といった言い方も。

when の意味だと思います。 「男たちは彼女がこのことをするのを見ていた。そしてわたしの祖母は彼らの満足気な眼差しの前に立たされた」

emailing clientsの意味を教えてください！ What did she do before? She was an administrative assistant. What were her responsibilities? She was responsible for emailing clients. という英文の意味がよくわかりません。 彼女は秘書さんだと思うのですが イーメールクライアントとは 単にPCの事ではないのでしょうか？ 上記のような言い方をした場合 メールを出してきた人について管理するような意味合いになるのでしょうか？ 教えてください！

アメリカの友人とチャットで会話をしていた時の内容です。 彼はバーから帰ってきたところで、私がdid you have a good time? と質問したところ、 of course until the end there was a fight right before we left との返信が来ました。 直訳すると「去る前に戦う権利があった。」ということになると思うのですが、 これは「店を出る時に、まだ居たくて葛藤したよ～～」という私なりの解釈で間違っていますか？ ちなみにfight right?と質問した時に、i meant as we were leaving there was a fight といわれました。 よろしくお願いしますm(_ _)m

こんにちは。倒置についてなんですが、 happy became sheというような文を倒置でつくることができますよね？ これは倒置の「補語＋動詞＋主語」の形に従って考えたんですが、 これが（元の文が）She became unhappy.だったら、unhappyを前に出すと、上の形のように unhappy became sheになるんでしょうか？それとも、「un」という否定の語がついているから、疑問文の語順にして unhappy did she became.になるんでしょうか？ それから、 The man went nowhere.のnowhereを文頭に出して倒置すると、場所をあらわす副詞がついていて、しかもgoは自動詞だから「場所を表す副詞＋自動詞＋主語」の順にして nowhere went the man. になるんでしょうか？それとも、「no」という否定語がついているから nowhere did the man go. にするんでしょうか？ すみませんが以上について教えてください。

watchの説明が理解の助けになりました。ありがとうございます。 and以降はas節に含まれるとありますが、ここに書いてある訳には The men watched as she did this and my grandmother was forced to stand before their gloating eyes 男たちはにやにやしながらみていました と書かれてあるので、theirはThe menのことだと思うのですが、そうなるとandで一旦区切れるように見えますが、間違っていますか？
