＃３です。補足です。 ＞＞ 文中でいきなり，”a fortunate circumstance ”という語句が出てくるので，文章の意味が分かりません．氷が水中で浮くことが有利な状況（？）なのでしょうか．．． 浮かなければ、音度が下がると、海底や湖底にどんどん氷が溜まって、流動性が無くなり、全体が固体になって、例えば陸上輸送に比べて遥かに能率的な船舶による物流が出来なくなるでしょう。 氷が浮かないで海面下で氷礁を作ったら『タイタニック』号のような海難事故が天文学的に増えるのではないかと思います。 しかし実際には、氷が浮くので、流動性がある、南極や北極で水の上に家が建てられたり、鉄道が敷けたりするのは、氷が浮くからでは無いでしょうか。 事実はどうであれ、こんな理由で、著者は氷が浮くのが有利な状況だと考えているのだと思います。

Sunspot numbers and the activity levels of the sun gradually change in time with quasi-cycles of about 11 years (Schwabe cycle).The polarity of the solar intrinsic magnetic field, which is more or less a simple dipole at every activity minima, reverses at every activity maximum. It changes the track of protons, the positively charged main constituent of GCRs, due to the spirally expanding interplanetary magnetic field formed by solar wind (Kota and Jokipii, 1983) and hence changes the attenuation level of GCRs in the heliosphere. Bulk of the GCRs comes from the polar region of the heliosphere when the polarity of the sun is positive, while GCRs come from the horizontal direction when negative.The attenuation of GCRs in the heliosphere is, therefore, more sensitive when the polarity is negative to the intensity of solar magnetic field and the tilt angle of the current sheets which expand horizontal direction. Thus the variation of the GCR flux on the earth has a “22-year” cyclic component, and will be transferred to the variations in carbon-14.
