For whatever things may have looked like from the outside, from my tyrannical perspective we could not even begin to fit in. http://usa.usembassy.de/etexts/writers/birkerts.htm

A growing populist force, the U.K. Independence Party, blames Europe for allowing hundreds of thousands of workers outside the country to settle here. “The business perspective, broadly speaking, clashes with the No. 1 concern about the European Union from the public,” said Mats Persson, director of Open Europe, which favors a looser relationship between Britain and the European Union.

Often, the hardest job for a writer is simply to get started. Some day there seems to be nothing to write about. But don`t worry if this "writer`s block" happens to you. The following ideas may help you begin your writing. First, try a timed free-writing. That`s, sit down and write anything that comes into your mind for 15 minutes. Don`t stop before the time is up. Much of what you write will not be good and you will throw it away. But you will also find some ideas on the paper that you like. You can keep these good ideas and rewrite them in a better way. Second, you can use the five questions of a newspaper reporter: who, what, when, where, and how. Just writing down the answers will help you begin to organize the facts for your essay. Third, you may find a short outline useful. Make a simple list of the major points you wish to make. Seeing the points on paper will help you decide in what order you should put them in the essay. Remember that usually you should put the most important point at the beginning of your essay. Just remember that every day we can find good ideas for writing topics. Many writers keep a small notebook handy to write down ideas from talking with friends, listening to television, or reading a magazine. These notes often become the source of good essays.

Even in the most informally constituted groups - a group of school friends, people waiting in line for football tickets - a sense of unity and purpose exists to hold them together briefly. For a time, the group is both a means to make outside contact for the common interest and a form of protection for the individual from the sometimes hostile world beyond the group. 最後の方にある a means to make outside contact for the common interest とありますが、「共通の利益のために、外部接触をとる手段」という訳でよいのでしょうか。

But this attitude does not normally last if the foreign visitor remains abroad and has seriously to deal with real conditions of life. It is then that the second stage begins, characterized by hostile and aggressive feelings toward the host country. This hostility evidently grows out of s genuine difficulty which the visitor experiences in the process of adjustment. There are house troubles, transportation troubles, shopping troubles. They help, but they don't understand your great concern over these difficulties. Therefore, the must be insensitive and unsympathetic to you and your worries. The result, "I just don't like them" You become aggressive , you band together with others from your country and criticize the host country, its ways, and its people;you talk as if the difficulties you experience were more or less created by the people for your special discomfort. If visitors succeed in getting so,e knowledge of the language and begin to manage by themselves., they are beginning to open the way into the new cultural environment. Visitors still have difficulties but the take a "this is my problem and I have to bear it" attitude. Their sense of humor returns. Instead of criticizing, they joke about the people and even begin to joke about their own difficulties. They are now on the way to recovery. In the fourth stage, the adjustment is about as complete as it can be. The visitor now accepts the customs of the country as just another way of living. With a complete adjustment you not only accept the food, drinks, habits, and customs of the host nation, but actually begin to enjoy them. When you return home for a visit, you may actually take things with you; and if you leave for good, you generally miss the country and the people to whom you have become accustomed.

As we use what the scociologist Daniel Bell has called our " intellectual technologies" ――the tools that extend our mental rather than our physical capasities ――we inevitably begin to take on the qualities of those technologies. The mechanical clock , which came into common use in the 14th century , provides a compelling example. In Technics and Civilization, the historian and cultural critic Lewis Mumford described how the clock " disassociated time from human events and helped create the belief in an independent world of mathematically measurable sequences." The " abstract framework of divided time " because " the point of reference for both action and thought."

yet those dreamy visions of Tuscany are exactly what draw the half – million tourists a year that the city relies on to survive. Lucca is not the only city caught in this struggle. Siena and other Tuscan cities have also banned fast food in their historical centers. Filippo candelise, a Lucca city council member who handles economic development, defended the new regulation as essential for Lucca’s future. “we absolutely reject the ‘ racist’ label, “ he said. “We simply want to preserve our cultural and historical identity .” I deed, visitors from countries that pride themselves on openness do not necessarily bring the same perspective to Lucca. “An American wants to find a typical ‘ osteria , ‘ not a Chinese restaurant , “Mr. Candelise said. Others found it strange that the city would ban fast food, yet allow shops selling underwear and plastic fancy goods. “It’s hard to stay an oasis ,” said Roberto Isola ,the owner of a gourmet food shop . “The ban on ethnic and fast food will not do much good . I think it’s too late . reject →~に受け入れるのを断る economic→経済上の historical→歴史的な
