earlier Friday は「金曜日の早朝」 what has become a weekly rally 「～するための毎週の集会となっているもの」のために集まった。 英語的表現です。 ただ「会議に集まった」でなく，「毎週」の意味を含め， to 以下で「～するための」の意味を加え， さらに，has become「なっている」の意味を含めたい。 what は「もの」というより，この場合は「（そういう種類の）会議」 the generals は「軍人の将校たち」でいいでしょう。 エジプトは軍事政権なのでこういう言い方をしているので， 普通には「政権の上層部の人たち」「大臣」ということ。 政府は軍政を早くやめるようにと要求するための毎週の集会となっている 集会のために，金曜日の早朝，カイロにデモ参加者が集まった。
