他の方がすでに回答しているところ、申し訳ございませんが、私はlifeという言葉に惹きつけられましたので、あえて書いてみました。あのソクラテスが述べたということですので、含蓄があるのだろうと思いますが、哲学に全く造形のない者が英文だけの字面から訳しますと以下のような解釈となります。 ソクラテスが言うには生きるべきか死ぬべきか検討も加えたこともないような人生は人にとって生きるに値しない。 このような発言は人にとってその通りと思える主張だと心にひびきますか。 すでに生きるべきか死すべきか検討された人生を除いて、生きるべきか死すべきか検討がなされていない人生が生きるに値するか否かを知る方法がありますか。 言い換えれば、生きるべきか死ぬべきか検討されていない人生について＿＿あるいはそれが存在すべきかすべきでないのか検討されていない何かについても、私どもはなにか道理にかなった要求や主張をなすことが出来ますか。 （訳者注：つまり究極の判断を人生においてもあるいは他の物事に付いてもしていないならば、私どもにはたいした主張も要求もできないのではないかというのがソクラテスの主張ではないかとおもいます）。

こんにちは、 本を読んでいて、恋人に散々迷惑をかけられた後に、やっと別れられてせいせいした人セリフに、 「Someone said "the unexamined life is not worth living." now I know that my life is worth living 」というものがありました。 そこで質問なのですが、このUnexamined lifeというのはどのようないみなのでしょうか？ 辞書では unexamined 【形】 未審査の、未検査の とか出てきますが、 「未検査の人生は生きる価値がない」では、いまいち意味が分かりません。 なんとなく、背景から「試練なき人生は生きる価値が無い。」と言いたいような気がしますが、、、。根拠がないので、、、。 というわけでタイトルの文はどういう意味なのでしょうか？ 教えてくださいよろしくお願い致します。

回答ありがとうございました。 translationは多くの誤解や意味の欠落を生むので 回答は 和訳でなく 意味 に重点を置かせてもらいました。 私の説明不足だったのですが、 ソクラテスが重視していたものはpyche（soul/mind)であり 彼が言いたかったexamined lifeとは philosophical な考え方や考察だったようです。 なので、生きる価値や死ぬ価値、とは少し違いましたが topicの意味を組み取るのに参考にさせてもらいました。 ありがとうございます。
