in the end という副詞だということで、そのまま覚えるべきものです。別な表現をすれば、finally ということです。 理屈でいえば、the end は 「最終」 ということが意識されます。「最終的な領域 （段階） に入っている」 という意味で in を用いれば in the end です。初期の段階 （領域） があり、そこから発展して the end にまで至ります。もうそれ以上の発展のさせようはない、という段階です。「結局・・・になる」 ことだから、「とうとう・・・」 ともいえるし、「最終的には・・・」 ともいえる。しかし、普通は、そんなことまで意識することはないでしょう。 辞書で end を引いてみれば、いろんな表現が目に入りますが、たとえば on end という表現があります。文字通りには 「end （端） の上に stand している」 という意味合いを持たせて、「直立して」 という意味になりますが、たとえば for weeks on end という場合の on end は継続していることを表すので、「何週間も続けて」 という意味になったりします。前置詞の意味だけにとらわれているより、表現をそのまま覚えてしまう方が早いし、実用的です。

ん～っとぉ、これは in the end のthe end が時の時勢という慣用句になっていまして、 in の後には時間的経過をさす言葉が来るイディオムなんですね～。^m^ だからin the end で「最終的な」という解釈が出来ますが、 前置詞だけ取りだして堅く考えない方がいいと思いますよ?(^^ゞ 何はともあれ頑張って下さ～い?!(^_-)-☆ （因みに当方はプロの通訳・翻訳家です。。。）
