「so less well than」の文構造を教えてください
次の文について質問させてください。 They discriminated between accurate and inaccurate investigators, but did so less well than investigators’ own confidence ratings and were biased toward accepting investigators’ decisions. They discriminated～ ,did～ and were～ というように、theyに3つの動詞がかかっていること。そして、おそらくdidはdiscriminatedを指しているのだろう、ということまでは分かりました。 しかし、「so less well than」の訳出がまったく分かりません。辞書を引いても全然だめでした。これは、どういう文構造になっているのでしょうか？ 解説していただけると嬉しいです。よろしくお願いいたします。

文構造を教えてほしいとのことでしたので、 問題の部分の構造だけを説明したのですが、 念のため、訳文も書いておきます。 彼らは正確な研究者とそうではない研究者を区別した。 だがそれは、研究者たち自身による自己評価ほどうまくはいかず、しかも、研究者たちの判断に左右されがちだった。

これは「構文」の問題というより、区切り方の問題です。さらに日本人が不得意とする “less” がからんでいるので余計むずかしくなっていますね。 did so ⇒ discriminated between A and B less well than… ⇒ less と出てきて、文意がわかりにくい場合は、思い切って less を否定語だと解釈する習慣をつけましょう。とたんに分かりやすくなります。つまり「～よりうまくはいかなかった」 英文の文構造をいったん解体し、できるだけもとの文意を変えずに自然な日本語訳をこころがけました。ただし、文脈が分かりませんので investigator をここでは「研究者」としておきますね。 「綿密な研究か、ずさんな研究かの判断できた。しかし、研究者自身による評価とくらべても、さほど明確な判断はできなかったし、またそれらの評価自体についても公平な判断を下すことができなかった。」

They discriminated between accurate and inaccurate investigators,は大丈夫ですね? そのあとですが、did so は前の文章全体です。 investigators’ own confidence ratings よりもその識別が下手だったといっているのです。

否定文 less He was less than enomoured of the musicがあります。 thanのうしろに省略されているのは 何ですか？ thanの後ろは完全な文が来るので、he was が省略されていると思います。 less thanで lessは形容詞ではなく辞書では副詞とあります。 しかし、be動詞なので 後ろにくるのは普通は形容詞ですよね。 less than enomoured とは どのようによめばいいのでしょうか？。 以前ほど音楽に夢中にならなくなった、という意味だと推測していますが。 less は adverb : to a smaller degree: not so much. enomoured of ..adj : liking sth a lot. 辞書を調べてもネットで調べても分からなかったので基本的な質問だと思いますが、質問をさせて いただきました。

こんにちは。 今回もHarry potter and the philosopher's stoneに関してです。 UK版のp.110の14行目の文に関してです。 初めての飛行訓練で手首を骨折して医務室へ連れて行かれるNevilleとHooch先生をMalfoyが見ているときの状況を説明している文章です。 "No sooner were they out of earshot than Malfoy burst into laughter." この文の『No sooner were they』の部分に少し違和感を感じました。 私が学んだ高校英語では 『Malfoyが笑い出すより二人(NevilleとHooch)が声の届かないところに行くより早くなかった。(二人が声の届かないところに行ったとたん、Malfoyは笑い出した。)』 なので、 "No sooner had they been out of earshot than Malfoy burst into laughter." の方が正しいような気がするのです。 いかがでしょうか？ 教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。
