この文章も倒置文とおもいます。 The extant "Contest", however, has clearly combined with the original document much other ill-digested matter on the life and descent of Homer combined A with B A = the original document B = much other ill-digested matter on the life and descent of Homer なぜそんな子供だましの倒置かは分かりません。muchがネイティブの人にもmatchを連想させるからかもしれません。貴兄の訳も同様にAとBをマッチさせると言うニュアンスです。 (1)probably文について probably drawing on 分詞構文ですよね。 Generally speaking, ～ の慣用句も分詞構文ですのでprobably を文頭に置くことは問題ないとおもいます。この辺りになると専門家に聞いた方よいかも。 ２）draw on = use, utilize or make use of 貴方の考えで正しいです。 ３）日本語に訳した場合、全体のバランスに合うように考えれば良いと思います。
