仮想法現在で良いのではないでしょうか？but 以下は過去形でもあり、一割だったかもしれないし、そうでないかもしれないと言うのと同様の疑念を含むとは思えませんので、仮想法にかけるのは無理かと存じます。 成功したのは才能ある１割だけだったとしても、クリントンは他のどの大統領よりも黒人のためになることをした。しかるにそれは黒人たちをずいぶ ん違った光で照らし出した。 つまり、この but は仮想法のそうでないかもしれないという不確実性を受けて、but it's true の意味で既知の事実を述べていると見るのが良いと思います。

2008年の一橋大学の問題文の一部です。 It has been only a few hundred years that we've known that we are mammals, and only a few decades that we've understood in considerable detail how we have evolved, along with all other living things, from simple beginnings. 上の文のItとthatの役割がつかめません 最初は時を表す訳出しないItだと考えました。 しかし、 It has been 3 years since I saw her last. のような文ならわかるのですが、 問題文だとthatになっているので、 thatの役割が分かりません。 次に、分裂文の可能性を考えましたが、 それだと、 only a few hundred years と only a few decades が today や yesterday のような単語と同じ様に、名詞の副詞用法をしていることになります。 これが、 The couple married only two weeks after they had got aquainted. のような文であれば、 only two weeks が名詞の副詞用法としてafter節を修飾していると分かるのですが、 上の文だと、only a few hundred years と only a few decadesを副詞用法で働く名詞とすると、何を修飾するのかが分からなくなります。 上の文のItとthatの役割を教えてください。

次の文は、文法的に正しいでしょうか？ It can't have been Tom that I met at the station. It could have been Tom that I met at the station. 私が思うに、it is..,...that の強調の文は、私がトムに駅で会ったということが前提になっていて成り立つ構文なので、その前提をくつがえすような、私が駅であったのがトムであるかどうかを推測するような文章は一緒になるはずがないと考えますがどうでしょうか？
