NHKWORLDに以下の文章があります The Chinese government places the number of dead from the quake and landslides at 41,353 people and says 32,666 others are missing. ここででてくる動詞「place」の意味が分かりません「発表する」という意味にすれば全体的に意味は通るのですが僕の使っている辞書にはそんな意味は載っていないし・・何なんでしょう よろしくお願いします 抜粋：http://www.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/22_08.html

イメージでとらえてみるというのはいかがでしょう。 「置く」という意味が本来ですからね、この文で行くと「死者の数」を41,353人というところに「置く」わけです。 まだ流動的な数字なので、取りあえずその数字のところにしておいた、という感じが伝わってくるように思いますが、いかがでしょうか。 日本語でも、数値目標を○○に置く、という言い方をしますよね。 同じ感覚だと思います。 訳するときは「政府は死者数を41,353人としており、」といったところが適当ではないかと思います。

こんにちは。 placeという単語も様々な意味を持ちますよね。 （位置・等級）を定める、確認する、などの意味もあります。わたしの持っている辞書にもそう出ています。 「発表」とした場合、日本語での文の意味は通じますが、英文の意味とはニュアンスが違ってしまいます。 ここでは、死者の数について述べていて、しかも、概算ではなく詳細な数字が出ている、ということからしても、 No.2さんもおっしゃっているように、 中国政府は・・・「確認している」という表現が英語のニュアンスにも合い、最も適しています。

identify という意味です． 「確認する（している）」としたらいかが？ 政府ですから公式の数ですね．発表というとまだ早い段階かも知れません．まだ増える可能性がありますし．現時点での「確認」でよいでしょう．

「発表する」がちょうど良いと思います。placeには「場所を定める」という意味がありますが、この「定める」を派生させて「判別する」「決定する」などの意味を持つことがあります。 この場合は中国政府が主語です。今のところ本当の数値は確認できません。ですから、政府は概算してこの数値を「決定した」つまり「発表した」となるわけです。
