#21の補足に質問が書かれていたので、もう一度考えてみました。 #19に書いたことは、今回の which が関係形容詞ではないということを納得してもらうために工夫したものですが、検討が不十分でした。 表現方法を変更して、再度説明してみたいと思います。まったく自己流で考えたものなので、正しいかどうかはご自分で判断してください。 [前提] - 語句にはとらえ方によっていろいろな側面がある。これを仮に属性と呼ぶ。 たとえば、French には言語という属性と、French という名前の属性がある。 [仮説] a) 関係形容詞の which は、先行詞と同じものである。 b)「関係形容詞 which + 名詞句」が成立する条件は、先行詞がこの名詞句で示す属性を持つことである。 たとえば、French には言語と名前の属性があるので、 ～ Frech, which language とか ～ French, which name などという表現が可能になる。 - The letter was written in French, which language I happened to know well. - The letter was written in French, which name reminds me French fry. （注：下の例は適当に考えたもので、正しいかどうか自信はありません） [問題の文に関して] 問題の文の Which が関係形容詞だとすれば、 先行詞となる「前文の out there」が「particular "out there"」という属性を持つ必要があるが、後者は前者の一部であり、属性とは考えられない。 [the Shetland Islands について] Their ship was driven away to one of the Shetland Islands, which name was unknown to them. "the Shetland Islands" には名前属性があるので、 the Shetland Islands = which が成立する。 "the Shetland Islands" には場所という属性もあるので、which location という表現で説明をすることも可能と考えられる。 なお、"one of the Shetland Islands" にはこの時点で名前がないので、 which (name) の先行詞として相応しくない。このため、この島の名前について説明しようとすると、whose name という表現が必要になる。 [質問について (1)] He was appointed ambassador to Spain, which post he filled with honor. "ambassador" あるいは "ambassador to Spain" には post という属性があると考えて問題はないと思う。 [質問について (2)] The plane may be several hours late, in which case there's no point in our waiting. "The plane may be several hours late" は一つの事象なので、fact や case といった属性を持つと考えられる。（which fact や which case で補足説明が可能）

On the other hand there are things you cannot be general about in English unless you use extra words in which to do it. 最後の５語 in which to do it について質問します。 do it とは何を指すのでしょうか？ whichの先行詞はextra wordsですので、最後の５語は解釈上to do it in extra wordsとなるのですが、doを主節のbe general aboutから連想してgeneralizeと見定めると、itがthingsを指すことになり単複が一致せず矛盾してしまいます… doは別の単語を指すのでしょうか？ それとも、itが複数を受ける例もあるのでしょうか？ どうか皆様の叡智をお貸しください。

(2) ...10 or 50 watts, of which one acts... (1)の書き方であればよく分かるのですが、上の文章にあるように(2)の場合ではどうしてこのような並びになっているのかがよく分かりません。(1)と(2)では意味はおそらく同じであると思いますが、違いや使われ方の特徴はあるのでしょうか。お詳しい方、何卒よろしくお願い致します。
