＞（1)were issued orders は必要なのでしょうか？ ＞were ordered to では駄目なのでしょうか？ おっしゃるとおり、どちらでも同じような意味になると思います。 ＞(2)後半にifが二つ出てきますが、意味がわかりません。 警察官に与えられた命令が２つあるのです。 to throw business owners in jail if they did not comply （命令に従わなければ店主を刑務所に入れろ） と、 (to)seize their businesses if they dared to shut their doors. （ドアを閉ざすようならば没収してしまえ） です。 実際には、この２つの命令は密接に関連してあって、 全く別の命令ではないので、続けて記述されているものと 思います。 違っていたら申し訳ないです <(_ _)>ペコリ

as if の意味についてお聞きいたします。 一通り参考書を読んだら、よけいに疑問が湧いて分からなくなりました。 as if ＋仮定法過去＝現在の意味を表す と書かれていたのですが、 It was as if they were trying to get a year's as if they were trying to get a year's information in one afternoon. という文ですが、これは過去のことを意味している文のように思われるのですが、どう理解すればよいのでしょうか？ さらに、Once we were back from the tour, Americans would stop asking questions. It was as if a curtain had come down on a stage. という文の解釈の仕方が分かりません。いったんホテルに戻るとアメリカ人は質問をやめ、それは、ステージに幕がおりたかのようだった。という訳ですが、as if の使い方からすると、過去のことを表すように書かれていたように解釈しているのですが、「質問を止めた時幕が既におりていたみたいになり、仮定法過去完了を用いるのは主節の動詞の表すときより前のことを述べる場合、というのと違っているように感じるのですが・・・」

ほとんどありえないと思われる未来を仮定するときに用いられる、If S should～とIf S were to～について質問があります。 両者の違いやニュアンスの差はどのようなところにあるのでしょうか。 また、そもそもshouldとwere toという形を使うのはなぜでしょうか。参考書には、shouldはshallの過去形であり、were toはbe toの過去形であると書かれていましたが、それではなぜそもそもどのような意味合いでshallやbe toを使うことになるのでしょうか。

回答ありがとうございます。 >to throw business owners in jail if they did not comply if二つに目が行き過ぎて気が付かなかったのですがcomplyまでで一つなのですね。言われてみるとそうしか考えられないのですが、ifが二つ？と思い他の考えが浮かばなかったです。。。 complyとseizeが同列のように考えてしまいました…。 私には英語の文の全体を見る力がないため、部分部分で見てしまう悪い癖みたいなのがあるみたいです。。。 ありがとうございました。
