ＯＣ（ドラマ）の中のフレーズ
ＯＣのドラマの中で、ガブリエルが、バーカウンター越しに、ライアンに対して下記のように話かけました。 Gabriel: Seth said you work here and I could use a cocktail Ryan: uh...I can’t serve you Gabriel: right, your not legal (laughs) ah, how about a cranberry juice Ryan: that I can do (smiles) "Seth said you work here and I could use a cocktail"を訳すと、 "セスからここで働いていて、お酒を飲めるって聞いてね"という感じでしょうか。 "I could use a cocktail"は、"i could drink a cocktail"と同じ意味でしょうか。 アメリカでは、お酒をバーで飲むときに"I could use a cocktail"のような言い回しをするのでしょうか。

アメリカに38年半住んでいる者です。 私なりに書かせてくださいね。 ＞"Seth said you work here and I could use a cocktail"を訳すと、 "セスからここで働いていて、お酒を飲めるって聞いてね"という感じでしょうか。 この表現は、"Seth said you work here. And I could use a cocktail"と言う表現で、"Seth said you work here and Seth said that I could use a cocktail"ではないのです。 つまり、セスがあんたがここに働いているって言ってたよ。 それはそうと、一杯飲みたいね。と言っているのです。 ＞"I could use a cocktail"は、"i could drink a cocktail"と同じ意味でしょうか。 結局はそういういう事になるのでしょうが、この表現は、カクテルを使える状況にいる(のどが渇いているのか、アルコールは欲しいのかアルコールが必要なのか)、とにかくカクテルを使えば一旦は満足できるのだけど、と言っているわけです。 つまり、いまのカクテルの必要性を言っているわけなのです。 同じように、これがタバコであれば、無性にタバコがすいたい状態にいるんだよ、ニコチンが切れたみたいなんだ、どんなブランドでも良いからもっていたらそれをくれよ、と言うフィーリングなのですね。 つまり、お酒にしろタバコのしろ、使う事が出来る、という事で、日本語でも、お酒があれば飲んでやるのになあ、お酒の一番いい理由を俺は知っているのを見せたいね、さらに、お酒がどんなに良いものなのか知っているのは今の俺しかいないだろうね、アルコールの使用法を知っているのは今の俺だろうね、と言う表現で「お酒ならもらうよ」と言うフィーリングを出しているような感じですね。 ただ、この英語の表現の方が一般的な表現だという事なのです。 急いでいるときに、I could use an airplane. のどが渇いているときに、I can use some water. お金が必要なときに、I could use some money. ぜんぜん理解できないときに、I could use some better brain than mine.と言うようにも使える表現なのです。 ですから、バーに行ったときに、Give me some beerという代わりに、I could sue some beerといえば、ビールが欲しい、ビールが飲みたい、と言うフィーリングの他に、ビールがほしくなるだけのことをやってきた、とか、外は暑くてしょうがないや、とか、今日は仕事で疲れてしまったよ、とかよく働いたぜ、言うようなフィーリングも含まれているわけです。 つまり、ビールを「使えば」そんなこと忘れられる、と言うようなフィーリングにもなるわけですね。 ですから、この表現はよく使われるわけです。 同情してもらいたい、と言うフィーリングともいえると思います。 これでいかがでしょうか? 分かりにくい点がありましたら、補足質問してください。

はじめまして。 １．I could use a cocktail： ここで使われているuseには、「（ただで）消費する」「（ただで）使う」という意味が根底にあります。 couldは婉曲の用法ですから、「できる」をやわらげて「できるみたいだね」「できるらしいね」ぐらいの訳でいいでしょう。 この例文を直訳すると、「カクテルがただで飲めるらしいね」となります。 （意訳）「ここじゃ、カクテルサービスしてもらえるんだって」 また、「（ただで）使う」とは「使える許可をもらう」ということにもなり、use a cigarette「たばこを吸ってもいい」などのニュアンスで使えます。 人の家で「電話を借りる」という場合、use telephoneと言うのも「ただで使う」が原義になります。 ２．I could drink a cocktail： drinkは「飲む」という行為をそのまま表しますから、ここでは「カクテルも（商品・サービスとして）扱っている」ということになります。 つまり、このdrinkだけでは、「ただで飲める」ニュアンスは出せません。 この例文を直訳すると、「ここじゃ、カクテルが飲めるらしいね」となります。 （意訳）「ここじゃ、カクテルもやってるんだって」 以上ご参考までに。

この場合、I could useとI could drinkだと、ちょっとニュアンスが違います。 "I could use ..."は、必要性をより強調しています。 訳すと、「今、カクテルがあれば（飲めれば）最高。ちょうだい。」って感じになります。（直訳ではありませんが、雰囲気的にはこんな感じです。） No.1の方がタバコにも使えるとおっしゃっていましたが、その通りです。でも、タバコとかお酒だけでなく、例えばdrinkという動詞を使ったとき、waterとかsodaとかでもこの文章、使えます。 例えば、走って帰ってきて、ヒーヒー言っているのに、飲料水を出してくれなかったら、"I could use some water right now."と、皮肉的に自分の気持ちを伝えることも出来ます。 （頭の中では、could useとcould drinkの差がわかっているのですが、説明するとなると正直、難しいです。下手な説明でごめんなさい！）

useはしばしば、drinkの意味で使われます。タバコを吸うときも useが使えます。

So, he decided to go buy a burrito. In this case it's like it's filling in for "because of this." "Let me see what I can do," and "I translated my message into Japanese" don't seem to connect in quite the same way. If you wanted to use "so", you could say- I'd like to help you as well. So, I'll translate my message into Japanese. Another way you could think of it is if the two sentences COULD connect naturally with only a comma you can use "so." You can write- I'd like to help you as well, so I will translate my message into Japanese. You can't write- Let me see what I can do, so I will translate my message into Japanese. Hope this helps, let me know if I'm writing too many notes here!
