英語の単語を複数セットでの組み合わせがネット上にいくつあるか、検索しています。 すると、私にとって不思議なことが起ります。 Googleで" .... " の形で検索すると、quotationsの中の語と同じ語順、同じ文字の組み合わせのヒット数が出ると理解しております。 たとえば、"a lot of rain" "much rain" どちらが多く使われているかとヒット数を出します。 "we have a lot of rain" 約 1,210,000 件 "we have much rain" 約1,100,000 件 次に、単語を1語加えて検索しました。1語加えるのですから、ヒット数が下がるはだと思い込んでおりました。ところが "if we have a lot of rain" 約 654,000 件 はいいのですが "if we have much rain" 約 3,370,000 件 となり、"if we have much rain"のヒット数が"we have much rain"を大幅に上回ってしまいます。 私が何か誤解しているのでしょうか。 あるいはコンピュータープログラムにifというのが使われるとかと関連して、この場合ヒット数に狂いが生じるとか何とかがあるのでしょうか。 Google検索が、はっきりとヒット数を瞬時に拾っているわけではなさそうだということはどこかで読んだことがあります。秘密の方式で検索しているとかと思っておりますが、とにかく腑に落ちません。どなたか、この不思議な現象を説明できるお方はいらっしゃらないでしょうか。お願いします。
