文の意味が取れません
二つよくわからないところがあります。 (1)“What have we done as a nation in the eight years since Columbine about this problem? We compound the trade of the day by our failure to deal with the proliferation of guns in our country,” he said. この文で、as a nationのa nationは国家としてという意味でしょうか？また、We compound the trade of the dayがまったくイメージできません。自分の訳では 「銃規制の問題について、Columbineの事件から８年間、国家として我々は何をしてきたのか？我々の国で銃が激増することに対処しなかったことで、We compound the trade of the day」となると思います。compoundが現在形になっており、まったく意味がとれません。compoundは結合するとかそんな意味ですよね。the trade of the dayがなぜここに出てくるのでしょうか・・。 (2)Wen also stressed the importance of strong economic relations between the countries, courting business leaders and commitment to an annual meeting on the economy between Chinese and Japanese ministers. 中国の首相が訪日したことについての記事なのですが、この文の、courting business leadersというのがわかりません。 「Wen首相も日中間の経済関係を強めることの重要性を強調し、courting business leadersを強調？(の重要性を強調？)、そして中国、日本の大臣との間で経済問題について年次会議を開く約束を強調した。」 stress the importance of A,B and Cになっているのか、stress the importance of A/ (stress)B and (stress)Cになるのかもよくわかりません。 周りに聞ける人(というか説明できる人)がいないので、いつもここに聞くことになってしまいますが、どうか宜しくお願いします。

辞書によるとcompound にはto increaseという意味も載っていますので、ここではそれかもしれませんね。 the trade of the day というのは「今日の商取引」みたいな感じかと思いますので、銃の激増への対処を失敗したがために、より一層銃の需要が高まることになってしまった、ということでしょうか。 (2) ですが、この文の最初の部分で検索をかけたらこういう文が出てきました。 Wen also stressed the importance of strong economic relations between the two countries, courting business leaders and committing to hold economy meetings between Chinese and Japanese ministers once a year. こちらの文の形なら分かりやすいですね。courting とcommitting がともに分詞構文を構成する現在分詞ということで。 回答になってませんね、申し訳ありません。

こんにちは。 (1)英英辞典で調べると、compound は to make a difficult situation worse by adding more problems to make a bad action worse by doing more bad things と出ています。混合の意味で使われる場合は、be compounded of something と受動態で使われる。 (2)同様に court は to try hard to please someone, especially because you want something from them 「見返りを期待して、ご機嫌をとる」という意味。courtingで「ご機嫌をとりつつ」。 しかし、その後に無冠詞の単数形でcommitmentが出てくるのが不可思議です。ここは commiting to hold とかの typo ではありませんか？

＃１ですが、書き忘れましたがcourting business leaders の部分の訳は「経済界のリーダー達のご機嫌伺いをし」くらいではないかと思います。court には「（有力者などの）機嫌を伺う」という意味がありますので。
想像が多分にありますが、 We compound the trade of the day→今日の銃の売り買いの状況を悪化させている （compoundには、悪化させるという意味もあるので） courting business leaders→経済界のリーダー（との交流）を歓迎します というような感じでしょうか。 stress the importance of A,B and Cになっていると思います。

(１) tihirokoさん、justsosoさん、joshsanさんが挙げて下さったように、英英辞典の意味を汲み取るとcompoundには(悪い意味で物事を)悪化させたり増加させてしまう雰囲気があるのですね。 Parismadamさんが挙げて下さったように、compoundに重罪を見逃すという意味もあったのですが、英英辞典によると、どうやら(お金を受け取る見返りに)見逃すということでした。 the trade of the dayはみなさんが仰るとおり、「今日の(銃)取引」のことで間違いなさそうです。 (２) 手元にあるOxford Advanced Learner's Dictionaryによると、 Court [TRY TO PLEASE] to try to please sb in order to get sth you want, especially the support of a person, an organization,etc. つまり、stressed the importance of strong economic relations,courting business leaders and (stress the importance of) commitment to an annual meeting. こうなると思いました。Commitmentは誤植ではありませんでした。 最初Parismadamさんの訳を目にしたときに、「おお！これかも」と思ったのですが、「Committee」ではなく、「Commitment」だったので、ちょっと「委員会」と訳すのは無理があるんじゃないかと感じてしまいました。 今回ここで色々指摘してもらったことで、英和辞典の意味だけではなく、英英辞典の意味も同時に確認することの重要性を知りました。 有難うございました。
