pencil eraserって？大きさを表すのですか?
いつもこちらでお世話になっております。 英文で訳せないところがあります。 2 plates that have a single chip each. Chip is a little larger than a pencil eraser. このpencil eraserって、どういう意味でしょうか? 英語に詳しい方、お知恵を拝借いただければ幸いです。 よろしくお願いいたします。

アメリカに37年住んでいる者です。 私なりに書かせてくださいね。 こちらでpencil eraserと言えば普通の鉛筆の頭についている、又は鉛筆につける消しゴムのことを言います。 今回の場合は良く知られていると言うことで礼に出しているわけでそれを言うには普通の鉛筆についている鉛筆の同じ直径の消しゴムのことを言っているのだと思いますよ。 こちらは日本ほど文房具が発達していません。 よって、お店の文房具セクションはみすぼらしいくらいです。 もっとも、ビジネスで使う文房具はかなりの種類がありその手の文房具屋はかなり大型で会社を相手にするので無料配達までやっています。 今回のおみやげにけしごむを持って行く事にしました。 これでいかがでしょうか。 分かりにくい点がありましたら、補足質問してください。

ご回答ありがとうございます。 よく知られているから普通に使うんですね。 なぜ消しゴム付き鉛筆の消しゴムなんて例えを使うんだろう??と不思議でなりませんでした。 日本の文房具は、ずいぶん発達しているということも知り、今回は勉強になりました。どうもありがとうございました。

もう答えは出ているようですが。 さてこの消しゴム付鉛筆、もう日本では見かけなくなりましたがまだまだ世界で普及品。 アメリカでも学生がみんな持っていて、しかもこの消しゴム全然消えない。紙を汚くしてあんまし強くこすると紙が破れる。 日本製の消しゴムを貸してあげると彼らはまるで魔法を見ているように感動しますよ。シャーペンなんて贅沢品だし、ましてボールペン・シャーペン一体型のようなハイブリッとペンにいたっては宝物。 お伝えしたかったことは、消しゴム付鉛筆は日本人が思うよりずっと身近な品物ということです。

お皿の説明みたいですね。 2 plates that have a single chip each. Chip is a little larger than a pencil eraser. 「1枚につき1個ずつ欠けがある2枚の皿。 その欠けは消しゴム付き鉛筆の消しゴムよりちょっと大きい」 ってことではないでしょうか？ 参考までね。
