homeworkですか。 だれでも知っているはずの単語なのに、生活経験がないばかりに、解体新書の翻訳のような世界に置かれてしまいましたね。 ここでは、「家の手伝いをして、収入を得た仕事」と回答します。 考え方としては、extracurricularと「教育の場所」の２つを出発点にすれば、方向性としては、on the right trackになると思います。curricularというのは、もちろん、名詞では、いわゆる「カリキュラム」-どんな科目をどのような順序でどのように学ぶかを定めた学習計画－ですね。その活動の外（extra-）の活動について話が流れていることに、まず、着目します。 学校の中では、クラブ活動（最近の中高では部活というのでしょうか、どちらかに呼称が変化してきているはずです）がその代表ですね。 教育の場は、他に、「社会」と「家庭」の２つがあります。ピアノコンクールで１位になるというようなのは「社会」における課外活動ですね（英文では、We are...has achieved.の部分です）。 最後に残されたのは、そう、「家庭の中におけるextracurricular activities」となりますね。お尋ねのSomeから始まる１文が関係する箇所です。当然、教科科目の学習以外のことですから、いくら数学を勉強したとしても、それは、勘定に入らないことになります。あと、家でする「作業」といったら何があるでしょうか？そうですね、家の手伝いです。芝刈りや食事の準備といった家族の一員としての仕事ですね。（家庭教育がよき市民となる最初の教育の場として）勤労を尊び、勤労には報酬が伴うという社会のルールを学ぶ場となっている（アメリカはプロテスタントの国でしたよね。）ことが、ここで思い浮かべば、アメリカ系の英語辞書でhomeworkを説明して、piecework（労働時間ではなく、労働内容に対して賃金が支払われる仕事）とする辞書の意味とも整合することになるのではないでしょうか。 最後に、 ここまでは、すべて、仮説です。適切な前提を出発点として、推論した結果ですから、事実と一致するかどうかは、残念ながら、滞在経験のない私には、こうだとは断言できません。 (1)文法と(2)背景的知識と(3)問題の英文を前後のコンテクストに照らし合わせて読むの３点から、引き出しうる回答を提示したまでです。 ある意味で、homeworkが空所だとして、そこにどんな概念の語が入るだろうかと予測してみるとよかったですね。最初に辞書ありきではなく、見当をつけて検証するのが、有効なreading strategyだと思います。
