これはセルビア人の方からのメールです。 By the way, Yugoslavia was the only state in the world that declared Muslims as a nation, which is, by my opinion great stupidity. declared Muslims as a nation がわかりません。 イスラム教徒を国家と宣言した？？（笑）にしかなりません（＞＜）すみません、お願いします。

手紙の前後関係無しでは推測するしかないですが、この場合の「nation」は、ほぼ「民族」という意味ではないですか？ チトーの作った旧ユーゴは、複数の民族、宗教、言語が入り混じり、いくつかの共和国からなる連邦国家でした。イスラム教徒（ムスリム）も、人口の一定のパーセンテージを占めていました。 「ムスリム」とはアラビア語の単語で本来の意味は「帰依した者」、つまりイスラム教徒を意味する単語。 ところが、旧ユーゴでは、複雑な国内問題を操作しているうちに、ムスリムをユーゴ国民を構成する民族の一つとして認める方向に進んでいきました。1968年に与党（共産党）がこれを認め、70年代以降は「ムスリム」は旧ユーゴの構成民族の一つと扱われてきた歴史があります。 旧ユーゴ以外の世界のどこでも、ムスリム（イスラム教徒）は、「クリスチャン」「仏教徒」という言葉と同じく宗教の区別であって、民族名ではない。イスラムは、民族や言語に関係ない世界宗教の一つですから。 ところが、旧ユーゴでは60年代末か70年代以降、セルビア人、クロアチア人などの民族名と並んで「Muslims＝ムスリム人」という民族名が作られた。（「クリスチャン人」とか「仏教徒人」と同じくらい変な言葉です。）ですから、「Muslims」を民族名に用いるのは、旧ユーゴの特殊な民族概念です。 で、問題のメイルに戻ると、"declared Muslims as a nation, which is, by my opinion, was a great stupidity" は、『ムスリムをいうものを一つの民族であると規定した唯一の国であったが、これは恐ろしく愚かな事だった』という意味に読めます。 書き手が愚かと考える理由が、(1)民族対立を悪化させてしまったから、(2)ムスリムに過剰な独立意識を与えてしまった（セルビア人はムスリム嫌いが多い）から、(3)宗教区分を民族区分と混同する論理的におかしな決定だったから、のどれなのかは私にはわかりません。

旧ユーゴのアルバニア系イスラム教徒が、セルビアとの対立のなかでイスラム（を信仰する）民族国家としての独立を宣言（主張）した歴史的経緯について書いているのではないでしょうか？ あの辺は複雑ですから。

Palestine was composed of the Ottoman administrative districts of southern Syria. Under customary international law, premature recognition of its independence would be a gross affront to the government of the newly declared parent state. It could have been construed as a belligerent act of intervention due to the lack of any League of Nations sanction for the mandates. In any event, its provisional independence was not mentioned, although it continued to be designated as a Class A Mandate.

以下の英文を訳そうと思っているのですが、うまく訳せません。 Macedonia declared its independence but was only slowly recognized as an independent state,partly because of its naming dispute with Greece. 自分なりに訳してみると、 「マケドニアは独立を宣言したが、ギリシャとのネーミング争いが部分的な原因で、ゆっくりと独立国家として認識されただけであった」 となりました。 しかし、なんだか不自然で、いまいちこの英文が何を言いたいのか良く分かりません。 まず、この私の訳ですと、butがあるのに逆接になってないと思います。また、because of ～がどこに掛かってくるのかが良く分かりません。 どなたか、うまく訳せる方がいらっしゃいましたら教えてください。

countryとstateの違いについて訪ねられ、 "country" is used to talk about mainly its land or people, "state" is used in a formal way than "country" to talk about its structure as a legal system rather than land or people. と答えてしまったのですが、これで良かったのかどうか自信がありません。 countryとstateの違いって何でしょうか？ nationについても教えてくださると助かります。
