and とor のちがい

The company is looking at the possibilities of buying back their stock, selling off one part of their business _____ cutting the work force as one way to increase the price of their stock. の文で下線に or が入るということなのですが、なぜ、andではだめなのかわかりません。よろしくお願いいたします。

はじめまして。 文法的には and でも or でもOKですが、この場合は as one way to increase the price of their stock. とあり、「株価を上げる1つの方法として」となっていることから or が適切ということだと思います。 and だと全てになっていまいますものね。 The company is looking at ； ・buying their stock （自社株を買い戻すこと） ・selling off one part of their business （事業の一部を売り払うこと） ・cutting the work force （従業員の削減？違うかも・・） 以上の3つのうちから 「1つの方法として」 ということでしょう。

Or で３つの内のどれか一つ、and で三つ全て、になるのはお分かりですね？例文は、as ONE way to increase the price of their stock と続いています。「株価を上げる一つの策」ですので、必然的に３つ全てではなく、その内のどれか一つです。 As ways to increase... であれば正解は and です。

文法の問題というより、内容で判断すべきなのでしょう。 株価を上げるのに、自社株を買うこと、事業の一部の売却、そして合理化のうちのどれがいいか、できるのか考えているということです。一つの方策（one way）といっているので、３つのうちから１つ、どれが一番いいのかということだから、and ではなく、or なのです。 経営的に考えても、「自社株を買うこと」、「事業の一部の売却」、そして「合理化」の３つとも市場動向、売却先、労働組合との交渉など考慮すべきことが多く、一朝一夕にできないことばかりで全部やろうなんてありえないでしょう。 GEのジャック・ウェルチならやりかねませんが…

書かれている３つの方法をすべて実施することは矛盾が生じるような気がするので、andではなく、orを使って、文脈上、「または」という訳をつけるのが適当だと思います。

andだと、三つの施策すべてを実施する事になっちゃいますが、株価対策としては、どれか一つだけでもかまわないから、orのほうが適切なのでは。

orは「～または、～」でandは「～と、～」になるので、意味が変わってしまいます。なので、andじゃないんだと思いますよ。
