カンマがなぜあるのでしょう？

某220に、 There are so many fine scratches and dents on its surface, it's no use polishing it. という文章があるのですが、 (1) これは、so ... that ～構文のthatの省略されたものでしょうか。 (2) もしそうだとすると、so ... that ～構文にカンマは入らないと思うのですが、surfaceの後ろにカンマがあるのはなぜでしょうか？

so that とは関係なく（so は、many の強調ですね）、単に、分の区切りのカンマなので、まったく別の分としてピリオドでもかまいませんが、内容を受けているのでカンマでつないだのでしょう。「, and」とかで接続してもかまいませんね。 「傷だのがとってもたくさんあって、磨いても無駄よ。」 ってことで、この「、」と同じことですね。
